Language Arts
This week in language arts the students focused on non-fiction texts. We read multiple articles about the smuggling or ivory and how it is affecting elephants. The students analyzed the structure of both texts and wrote a piece comparing and contrasting the articles. We are really trying to focus on using text evidence correctly and appropriately to support our claims.
Social Studies
We are absolutely loving Blood on the River! This historical fiction novel tells the story of the first colonists traveling to Jamestown. We are using the novel to not only learn about the history of our country , but to help us with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing strategies, and geography as well.
Writing
This week we focused on the different text structures that informational pieces typically follow. The students are deciding which text structure they will use for their non-fiction writing pieces.

How much is 20%?
The fire marshal informed us that we did not meet fire code and thus had to take bulletin boards down. He said that only 20% of each wall could be covered. So I turned it into a math project. I contracted out each group to determine how much I would need to take down to meet fire code. The class did an awesome job & when the marshal returned on Wednesday he said we were up to code!
