Pennies for Patients
Dear Parents and Students of PHSC,
During the next four months, the National Honor Society will be collecting spare change and other donations to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients Campaign. Central has been participating in this fundraiser for 10 years and the generosity of the Pickerington Community has been astounding. With this being our 10 year “anniversary”, we are hoping to make this our biggest contribution yet.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a voluntary health organization which prides itself on the immense amount of support it gives to the funding of blood cancer research, providing education and patient services and its relentless pursuit in finding the cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. In the time since the Society was founded, it has invested more the $550 million in blood cancer research. In 2007 alone, $67.7 million was invested and 5.1 million contacts with patients, caregivers and healthcare professional were made. Our participation in the Pennies for Patients campaign assists LLS in reaching their goal and helping many central Ohio families live a more “normal” life.
We are asking for your donation of spare change to assist local families who are affected by blood cancers. There are multiple ways to participate!
- Members of NHS will be walking around school with containers to collect spare change and any other monetary donations. Even the smallest donation will help.
- If you would like to donate more than spare change, checks can be made payable to LLS and sent with your student to school or mailed to:
Pickerington Central, 300 Opportunity Way, Pickerington OH, 43147
attention Heather Peirano.
- Donate online at http://www.studentseries.org Please choose our school from the drop-down menu.
Remember all donations are tax deductible! Thank you for your support and generosity.
Sincerely, Brayden Harlor (NHS President)
Caroline Reyes (NHS Vice President)
Heather Peirano (NHS Advisor)

Spring AIR test prep and testing information
Spring AIR Testing is right around the corner for our students. This document contains some important dates and information regarding AIR Test Prep sessions and AIR Testing.
AIR Test Prep/Tutoring
February 18 – April 20
AIR Test Prep/Tutoring will meet in two sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:15PM – 4:00PM and again from 4:00PM - 4:45PM. Four Sessions will also be held on Saturdays from 9:00AM – 9:45AM, 9:45 - 10:30AM, 10:30AM - 11:15AM, 11:15AM - 12:00PM. We will have sessions available for all seven tested areas. (ELA1, ELA2, Algebra, Geometry, Biology, American History, and POD/Government).
Please note that students who are currently enrolled in a tested class, do NOT need to attend sessions to take the spring assessments. For example, students currently taking English 10 will automatically be registered to take the English 10 (ELA2) assessment. They may attend sessions for extra help in the content area but it is not necessary.
***Students who need to RETEST in a subject area will need to attend the remediation session to be able to take that test this spring.***
DATES WE WILL NOT HAVE TEST PREP/TUTORING SESSIONS
We will not have Test Prep / Tutoring sessions on the following dates:
March 7 & 14 - Parent Teacher Conferences
March 18 - 23 - Spring Break
April 20 - Easter weekend
The State of Ohio will release 2018 Fall results to the District on February 19 . Once the scores have been received, PHSC administration and counselors will be working to update students’ graduation AIR points and determine if students have met graduation requirements or will need to retest in the spring.
For Seniors who have not met the graduation requirements, we will be meeting with them individually to determine the next steps.
It is our hope that all students who tested during the fall of 2018, will receive their results by March 4 and will know if they need to retest in the Spring. This will also help us determine which remediation classes they will need to attend. Students may begin attending remediation sessions prior to receiving their test scores.
If you are unsure if you should sign-up to attend a session, we recommend signing up for the session first. You can always withdraw from the session if it is not needed.

Community Rave to Save
Global Scholars Program
This course provides hands-on experiences, simulations, and practical examples and strategies for global studies and cultural competence. Students will gain a deeper understanding of and define intercultural competence, explore the "other" and the value of varied perspectives throughout their school communities, gain insights into cultural nuances and effective interaction with local-global cultures, and develop a skills tool-kit to leverage the global landscape of their classrooms and school communities to enrich all students' experiences.
In Year 1, students will attend four off-campus events at universities and businesses and select four enrichment experiences under the following themes: Investigate the World, Recognize Perspectives, Communicate Ideas, and Take Action. Students can modify assignments that they are already creating in their PLSD courses for credit. Successful completion of Year 1 activities is required for participation in Year 2. In year 1, students must be concurrently enrolled in a World Language at PLSD.
