All models are simplified versions of the real thing and the OSI networking model is no different. In the early days of networking different manufacturers made unique types of network that all had their own cabling, hardware and many other unique features. Although these networks worked fine, it was difficult, to put it mildly, to connect networks of different manufacturers. To overcome this problem a guide or model was required that defined the functions of a network so that people who made hardware and software could work together and make networks that worked well together. This was achieved by the ISO (international Standards organisation who developed the OSI seven layer model. OSI stands for Open Systems Interconnection.
