Il Cammino della Speranza, Pietro Germi, 1950
Women wait anxiously at a minehead in Capodarso, Sicily. Their men are underground. The mine is closing and the miners refuse to come up unless the owner relents. After three days, they give up in despair... In a bar in town, Ciccio is recruiting workers for jobs in France. He can get people over the border - for L20,000 a head. Enough people to fill a bus sell their belongings to pay the fee, including Saro and his 3 young children, and Barbara and her man Vanni, in trouble with the law and desperate to flee Italy. In Rome, Ciccio points out Vanni to the police and in the shoot-out, both Vanni and Ciccio escape. The others are arrested. They are ordered by the police to return to Sicily or be charged with "illegal expatriation". With Saro as leader, and nearly out of money, they head north instead. Hardship draws Saro and Barbara closer together.

Cena di San Giuseppe
Casa Italiana of Nazareth College invites you to join us to celebrate la Festa di San Giuseppe, Saint Joseph's Day. We are opening our doors to thirty (30) guests for a fabulous dinner which will be cooked for us by our chefs Tina Mogab and Bob Calcagno.
In Sicily and in many Italian-American communities, thanks are given to San Giuseppe for preventing a famine in Sicily during the Middle Ages. According to legend, there was a severe drought at the time, and the people prayed for their patron saint to bring them rain. They promised that if God answered their prayers through San Giuseppe's intercession, they would prepare a large feast to honor him. The rain did come, and the people of Sicily prepared a large banquet for their patron saint.
Cost: $50 per person or $85 per couple
Given the limited amount of space in the Casa's lounge, we will honor the first 30 people who contact the Casa Italiana at 585-389-2468.
