The South Side Story

Parent/Guardian Newsletter - October 2021 Edition

A Letter From the Principal….

Dear Parents/Guardians,

There's no doubt about it, we are officially in fall. While pools and ice creams stands are closing up, pumpkin farms and corn mazes are busy with those who love this season. I am one of those people, as well as one of the crazy ones that actually enjoys winter.

While it has been a bit of an adjustment this year, with our school being split across two sites, the students are doing very well overall. The teachers are working feverishly to provide them with some normalcy, while focusing on increasing academic, social and emotional functioning.

Thank you for your support at home. As you know, your partnership with the school is an important part of your child's success. Here at South Side we have really been pushing our 3 School Rules/Expectations of "Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful." For the rest of this month, if you could help us promote our monthly focus of Respect, it would be appreciated. Please provide a little extra praise when you see your children doing things such as holding the door, saying please/thank you, waiting their turn, following directions, etc. This helps us in our mission at SSES. If you don't have many opportunities for this, try to create some or encourage your child to do some of these things on their own.

Appreciatively,

Vanessa McClowry

South Side Elementary Principal

Reminders From the Office

An Important Reminder from the Main Office…

  • Please remember to have identification accessible and ready for school personnel, any time you are picking up during the day or at dismissal on First St. It is important for your child’s safety that you have identification with you each and every time. We appreciate your assistance with this!

  • If your child will be arriving to school after 8:50 a.m., please call the SSES office ahead of time to let us know. Also, upon arrival please walk your child to the front office entrance and ring the bell. For safety concerns, we ask that you accompany your child to the door. Your child will be checked in for attendance. At RSES, the procedure is the same except students can be dropped off at Door C.

  • Also, it is important to note that the South Side parking lot is one way only with the entrance on High Street and an exit on First Street.

Thank you for your assistance with this!

Halloween Parade

As a reminder, we will be having a Halloween indoor/outdoor parade on Oct. 29th. You should have received information regarding the specifics. We will not have volunteers due to COVID protocols, but if you are willing and able, please feel free to send in snacks for the Halloween party. More information about this will be coming from your child's teacher.

WIN

We are excited to announce a new district initiative called WIN, or 'What I Need' time. Specifically, this allows for all students to receive targeted instruction at a designated time each day with the same group and provider. This year, students were placed in groups following benchmark assessments that assessed several skills including basic math fact knowledge, math problem solving, vocabulary, comprehension, decoding, reading fluency and more. Students with a higher need were paired with AIS teachers, while other students are serviced by other teachers or adults in the building. So far, we are off to a great start and are happy with the initial results.

Open House

On October 14th, we released our first virtual Open House. This gave us an opportunity to provide parents/guardians a glimpse into the classrooms at South Side. While it certainly is different that what we traditionally do, we hope you enjoyed the videos.

PTA

Please be sure that your child comes to school on a regular basis. It is extremely important for them to be in session every day, including half-days of instruction. If your child is not well and unable to come to school, please communicate with our School Nurse, Joanne Vaccaro (315-697-6362).
