Dear Oak Hills Families,

As we wrap up the month of October, we recognize signs of Fall all around us! Days are getting shorter and cooler. We begin to think about shifting from outdoor activities to indoor activities. Settling in with a good book is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon!

Fall also marks the start of the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB), a beloved tradition in most schools across the state! OBOB offers students in grades 3-12 an opportunity to read a range of books, across literary genres, reflecting diverse perspectives. OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

Due to Covid restrictions, OBOB is not able to host regional or statewide competitions for 2020-21. However, there is 2020-21 OBOB Book List and many titles are available online via Sora. At Oak Hills, we will be celebrating the students who read all 16 OBOB books and complete the comprehension questions in our Our OBOB Hall of Fame! To participate, please read the books listed on the OBOB Book List and complete the comprehension questions included in this newsletter. Settle in with a cozy blanket and a stack of good books this Fall! We can't wait to recognize our students for their effort in connecting with text!

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 18th! The Oak Hills PTO will be hosting a Move-A-Thon to raise funds for our school. Families will sign up through Pledge Star and children will participate by "moving" for 30 minutes from 1:00-1:30pm on November 18th. The top individual fundraiser in each class will pick up lunch (socially distanced) from their teacher at school. If our students reach their fundraising goal of $25,000, Ms. Baumgardner and I will be sprayed with silly string by the cars that pass through our parking lot.

Students may choose to do a physical activity of their choice. Looking for a fun movement idea? We will be hosting a school-wide Zumba session for students and staff. We will send out to Zoom a link for families in the next couple of weeks. Thank you to our Oak Hills PTO for thinking of creative ways to connect our community during a challenging time! We are all excited to be a part!

Each year students are considered for Talented and Gifted students in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form below. Completing this form gives your child's school TAG committee more information about your child. Classroom teachers also collect observational data from students each fall and make recommendations for testing.

TAG TestingDue to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, CDL, the BSD TAG testing process will look different this year. Teachers will spend this Fall/Winter collecting evidence on how students respond to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. School TAG facilitators will collect nominations from teachers and parents this Fall/Winter and along with collected evidence, decisions will be made on which students will be selected to test in person after March, 2021.

CogAT

• The CogAT Screener will not be administered to all 3rd & 5th grade students this year.

• Grade 5 students will be invited to take the CogAT Full Version at designated test sites on December 2 or December 9. Scores can be used for both TAG/Summa. Invitations for testing will be emailed from the District mid November.

• A school TAG committee will determine which K-3 students take the CogAT, based on nominations and collected evidence. Testing for K-3 students will occur after March, 2021.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (Reading and Math) - TBD

• A committee will convene to look at achievement testing during CDL and recommendations will be made for the testing process.

*CogAT and ITBS scores are used for TAG identification in all grades.

*TAG Services will work with other BSD departments to provide testing access for all indicated students.

Calling all 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders! If you read all 16 OBOB books, complete and submit this reading comprehension questionnaire, then you will be honored into the Oak Hills OBOB Hall of Fame!

Parents and students can check out Oak Hills library books! Please follow this video to choose and check out library books. You may also check out e-books! Once books are pulled and ready, an email will be sent confirming that the books are ready. Library books requested by Tuesday at noon will be available the following Wednesday at Curbside Pick Up or Thursday Book Bus stops. Books are pulled on Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Please return books during Wednesday Pick-Up or via the Book Bus.

The Oak Hills Library Book Bus comes to the stops listed below on Thursdays! Come and check out some selected-for-you books or pick up your library book requests! Check out this map of the book bus route. We are at each stop for about 20-25 minutes. Please wear a mask and stand 6’ apart. Here are the approximate times and locations:
