Dear Panther Families~

We are only 8 days away from midterm of our first semester! This quarter has been filled with many new things at KCSD, and I want to give a shoutout to our staff, students, and parents who have made it all possible. We are grateful to be in school with a virtual option for families!

THANK YOU to our teachers who have implemented virtual learning for students unable to attend school and for learning to teach wearing PPE and following safety protocols. They are working so hard to make sure kids are learning and feel safe.

This week the sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences was shared by email. These will be held either by Zoom or phone this year. We encourage you to sign up for a time to visit with your child’s teacher. Please contact the teacher if you have questions. Conferences will be held on October 28 & 29. There will be no school on October 30.

The impact of COVID-19 on the school remains low. Our average rates are listed in the table. Students and staff are staying home when they don’t feel well, and we appreciate this help to keep everyone healthy!

As the weather gets colder, please remember to sign-up for our notification system. The directions are listed in the newsletter below. We announce delays and cancellations as soon as decisions are made, so families can implement their plans. If you haven’t made plans yet for these possibilities, now would be a great time to do so!

Enjoy this weekend~

Officer Keller and Chief Fuller came to the kindergarten classrooms to talk to them about the importance of wearing a seat belt. Officer Keller also showed them equipment he has to wear as a police officer.

As a part of our caring community, West Elementary students cheered on the Coaches vs. Cancer relay runners as they ran by our school.

KMS Band News

The KMS Band Program has had a really exciting start to the 2020-2021 school year! It’s been a little different from years past due to COVID. We have implemented a variety of new procedures to help keep our students safe. Below is a look at what we have been up to so far this year.

2020 KMS Marching Band Performance

On October 14th, the KMS 7th and 8th grade bands did a performance for West Elementary and some high school Band students. We videotaped the performance and will be sharing with the public at a future date. We would like to thank KMS Instructional Coach Kelly Keefer and High School Band Instructor Meredith Tipping for their help with the videotaping. I want to also give a big shout out to Officer Kyle Keller for helping with traffic control.

New COVID Band Procedures At KMS

This year has definitely been due to the current pandemic. With COVID, a group of researchers out in Colorado did several studies on how to keep our students as safe as possible. Here at Knoxville, we have implemented several new practices to ensure the safety of our students. The first change is that we are now having our band practices in the auditorium. The wind players are spread out in the seating area, while the percussion students are on the stage. Another strategy that we have implemented is having students use bell covers and towels for students to empty their water keys. After every rehearsal, both of these items are washed. Last (and certainly not least,) because we are in the auditorium, we have an advantage of providing several ways to get into the auditorium to minimize traffic. At each entrance/exit, the school has provided hand sanitizer for the students to use. The Knoxville Community School District has been extremely supportive of this effort and has provided the middle school and high school Band students bell covers and instrument towels.

6th Grade Band

The 6th Grade Band has gotten off to a great start this year. All of the 6th grade students have done a great job learning their new instrument and what it’s like to be a part of a band. We are always open to having more students join the 6th grade band. If any 6th grader is interested in being a part of this awesome band please contact Mr. McBride at

When our team is on the road and the host school offers a livestream - we will post that link on Facebook with the host school spectator guidelines that have been sent to us - this will ensure to our viewing public the post/link is authentic.

We will also stream all concerts in KPAC on there as well.
