Mill Creek OST

Snow Much More Fun

It's hard to believe that this is the last week before winter break begins and we plan on packing so much more holiday wonders into it.

Thursday, December 18th we are having a Holiday Extravaganza in OST; We will have an "UGLY" holiday sweater contest and test our noggins with a Candy Cane Trivia Bowl. We will celebrate the end of the 2014 sipping hot cocoa and sharing memories with good friends.

Friday, December 19th, we are prancing to Crown Center at 10:30am to be mesmerized by Kaleidoscope, enjoy holiday lights and sights, and finish it off by laughing and watching "A Night At the Museum: Secret Of the Tomb" at Screenland Theater. We will return to school around 4:30pmish (depending on downtown traffic, we will leave Crown Center at 4pm)

Your child will need to bring a sack lunch, for this trip disposable would be preferred. Please remember we do not refrigerate any lunches. Children need to wear their JCPRD shirts!!! REGARDLESS OF WEATHER, WE WILL HAVE CARE.

Monday, December 22nd, Winter Break begins, your child(ren) needs to be registered to join us during this time, Wednesday, December 31st is the last day of winter break. REGARDLESS OF WEATHER, WE WILL HAVE CARE.

Look for the January newsletter the 1st week of the new year.

Cold Weather

With the temps getting colder and colder, we ask that your child has the appropriate attire (coat, gloves, hat) to wear outside, If they do not, they will need to stay inside.

Cold weather can cause more harm than just winter blues and cabin fever, the dry and cold air can cause painful chapped lips and hands. We can give some relief to those exposed chapped areas by signing your name next to your child's name on the form for permission to give Vaseline (for lips) and/or Gold Bond Sensitive Skin lotion (for hands). You can write down if both are OK to give or just one. If you do not give permission we will not be able to help your child when in pain due to chapped areas.

Winter weather is nipping in the air and good planning is key. Keep in mind that SMSD USD512 JCPRD locations DO NOT offer Snow Day care, you will need to make other arrangements. Check your local news stations for closures, you can also check Twiiter and we will have updates if we are closed. During Winter Break we will remain open for any and all weather.

I want to thank you for remembering to sign your child(ren) in and out. I know time is valuable and it can be a bit of a hassle to sing in/out your child(ren) but it is most important that we continue to remember to sign in/out. Thank you again for taking the time to do so.

  • Check-In: We will check students in at the Café. If you know your child(ren) will not be in OST please call us at 913.599.5785 or email me at If a student has not checked in with us, we will contact you if we haven't heard from you first.

  • Snack: We are kicking off our healthy new year with a new snack menu. We are very excited to report that we have taken the Commit to Health Pledge! In doing so you can expect to see our out of school time participants engaging in more physical activity, learning about good nutrition, and eating healthier snacks while in attendance at JCPRD. Commit to Health is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park and Association and The Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Our staff has worked hard to develop a new food service menu that features items that are nutrient dense, low in fat, sugar, and sodium, as well as more fresh fruits and vegetables. Please support our efforts to help students develop healthy eating habits by encouraging them to be open to trying new foods and by reinforcing the benefits of nutritious diet. Healthy snacks and meals improve cognitive function, increase energy, and help children grow strong muscles and bones!

  • Homework/Reading time: During snack time your child(ren) can sign up for our homework/reading time that will begin directly after snack (roughly 3:30pm) in the café. We encourage kids to sign up but do not force them. When they do sign up we do expect them to come to the room and QUIETLY do their homework or read for 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Activities: Some of the clubs that we will be starting will be: Cooking, Art & Crafts, Healthy New Year, and Engineering. As we progress through out the months, new clubs may be added.

  • Outside/Gym Time: We believe it is essential for minds and bodies to have mental health breaks and join in on fitness breaks. Weather permitting we will go outside. JCPRD follows the Shawnee Mission school district’s weather policy. Please remember to have your child(ren) layer up and bring a jacket with their name labeled inside it. We will have structured activities for them to do during this time as well as free play.

  • Check-Out: When you come to pick up your child(ren) please remember to WALK IN and SIGN THEM OUT. There is a late charge of a $1 per minute after 6:00pm
