Kent County Health Department Hearing and Vision Screenings -- April 17 & 18, 2023
Each year, the Kent County Health Department comes to our school to do required hearing and vision screening for specific grade levels.
North Godwin Elementary Initial Screens will be held on April 17 and April 18, 2023
3rd Grade: VISION SCREENS
4th Grade: HEARING SCREENS5th Grade: VISION SCREENS
RE-SCREENS for students of concern and absent students on the days of the initial screens will be held on May 4 and May 5, 2023.
Vision Screening:
Includes testing for visual acuity, eye muscle function, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and symptoms of other eyesight problems.
Conducted at least once between the ages of 3 and 5 for preschoolers, and grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, or in conjunction with driver training classes.
Hearing Screening:
The GOALS of the Hearing Screening Program are to:
- Identify hearing loss in children as early as possible,
- Reduce preventable hearing loss and ear disease by facilitating prompt medical care for children at-risk for hearing loss,
- Assist in the identification of hard of hearing children so their educational, medical, and social needs may be defined, and
- Help parents and school personnel to understand the child's needs related to the hearing loss.
A referral is made to the child's primary care provider, pediatrician, Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physician, or audiologist. Follow-up is conducted by Local Health Departments on all referrals to assure that care is received. Completed follow-up is reported by the Local Health Department to the MDHHS.
Some Local Health Departments also sponsor Otology Clinics where the child is evaluated by an audiologist and ENT free of charge. The clinics are sponsored by Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS).
Screenings are free and available to all children in Michigan. They are conducted in schools, preschool programs, and at your Local Health Department.
- Over 450,000 hearing screenings are performed annually on preschool and school-age children.
- Hearing screenings may identify conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing losses as well as middle ear pathology. Children are referred to medical professionals for diagnosis.
- Screenings are conducted at least once between the ages of 3 & 5, and in kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades.
- Children who are referred for medical treatment are screened every year unless directed otherwise.

Attendance Policy
The normal attendance expectations for any given child in the Kent County Intermediate School District are as follows:
> that a child miss not more than 10 days of Excused Absences for the entire school year,
> that a child have no Unexcused Absences for the entire school year
> that a child have not more than 5 Tardies combined with Leave Early check-outs per semester.
> that a child have no Suspensions for the entire school year.
Godwin Heights Public Schools are held by law to report tardies and absences in excess of the guidelines listed above to the Kent Intermediate School District Office of Truancy and School Attendance-State Law Enforcement Division.
The primary rationale for positive attendance is the strong relationship between student attendance and student achievement. Chronic student absences reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates. These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in elementary school than their peers who graduated from high school.
