Year 5 Newsletter
Friday 23rd June
Welcome to the Year 5 newsletter!
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the final Year 5 Newsletter! It is hard to believe that another school year is nearly over and your children are a week away from being in Year 6!
Children and teachers are enjoying the varied learning engagements of our final unit. In English, children have written some fantastic poetry in a number of forms. They have enjoyed researching poetry and learning a chosen poem to perform. Each class is engaged in drama activities which are helping them to find a variety of strategies to resolve conflicts. Students are turning these into plays for performance.
As the year draws to a close, we will begin to send books home for parents to have a look at and keep for posterity! Children may want to bring in an extra carrier bag next week.
The children are thinking excitedly about the school year ahead. On Monday next week you will receive an email informing you of who your child's class teacher will be in Year 6. The children themselves will also be told and will spend a session in the afternoon with their new teacher. We are sure you will hear all about it on Monday evening!
The Year 5 team would like to take this opportunity to thank all Year 5 Parents for your continued support throughout the year. The home-school relationship is a very important one and we wouldn't be able to do a lot of the things we do without the support of parents. From class parents to trip volunteers, we really do appreciate the time and effort you put into helping us provide the best education for your children.
And finally, please send an email to inform us if your child will be missing any days of school before the end of term. Have a great summer break and we look forward to seeing you around the school next year!
Many thanks again and safe travels,
The Year 5 Team

Crossroads Trip
As part of our current unit, Sharing the Planet, on Wednesday this week all the Year 5 classes traveled to the Crossroads Foundation headquarters on the Gold Coast. The children took part in a tour of the facilities, gaining a better understanding of how the charity collects unwanted items from Hong Kong and distributes them to countries in need.
They also took part in a simulation activity. The simulation connects participants to the multi-faceted challenge of development, within the fictional village of Kalumbut. An aid agency has offered to find solutions to problems such as a local rubbish dump, lack of access to clean water, health issues and few kids attending the local school. In order to see these solutions bring change to the community as a whole, participants must demonstrate their ability to communicate and work as a team.
It was a very inspirational day and we received several comments from the staff complimenting the children on their deeper thinking skills and positive attitude to taking action. We were very proud of them and they really represented Kennedy School in the best possible way!
If you also want to take action and help Crossroads provide for those in need, you can visit their website for more information.

Unit of Inquiry
Our final UOI for the year is:
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea: Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.
Lines of Inquiry:
● Causes of conflict (personal, local and global)
● Strategies used to resolve conflict
● Consequences of resolutions
Maths
We have been finishing off our unit on Pattern and Function. The unit conceptual understandings are:
· Functions are relationships or rules that uniquely associate members of one set with members of another set.
· By analysing patterns and identifying rules for patterns it is possible to make predictions.
· Patterns can often be generalised using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.
· Exponential notation is a powerful way to express repeated products of the same number.
The 'I Can' statements for the children are:
· Investigate and represent patterns using words, symbols, numbers, tables and graphs.
· Identify rules for patterns to predict future terms.
· Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers.
· Solve equivalent number sentences involving multiplication and division to find unknown quantities.
A reminder that children can support their learning over the holidays by completing the Mathletics activities online.
Important Dates:
- 30th June - End of the school year (12pm)
