Senior Checklist for College Applications
If you are planning on applying to a 4 year University, you should do the following things. Maybe you already did some of these things, but continue wherever you are. Here is a list you can print with links. You can also check out the Student Services Hub -> College & Career -> Seniors, Applying to College for the same information. Hopefully you paid attention in the Senior Meetings we held last week for the English classes.
- Research: Determine what you want, make a list of colleges that fit you, then find out what the applications for those colleges need. Check out these 3 Helpful College Search Resources for help making your list.
- Self-Description: Determine how to present the best possible YOU. Complete your brag sheet to write down your accomplishments, write a personal statement, and request any letters of recommendation from teachers or counselors if needed.
- Gathering Information: Get everything you need for your applications; create accounts, get transcripts, check on letters of rec, finalize essays, test scores, etc.
- Implementation: Complete online applications and submit them by the deadlines. Complete Financial Aid Applications (FAFSA or CADAA). Possibly have interviews with college representative (although not required.)
- Clean Up: Monitor applications by reading emails and checking application portals.
- Results: Evaluate offers and decide which college to attend, then complete the Next Steps for that college.
California State University (CSU) Applications
University of California Applications
UCs do NOT require Transcripts & letters of recommendation at the time of your application. The following paragraph was cut and pasted directly from the UC Application website.
"Don't send official transcripts when you apply. If you're admitted to UC, then you must submit final transcripts to your campus admissions office.
UC does not require (nor read) letters of recommendation at the time of application. A campus may ask for them later as part of a supplemental review, so be sure to check your email."
Some of their thoughts about the Personal Insight Questions (PIQs):
The personal insight questions are about getting to know you better — your life experience, interests, ambitions and inspirations. Think of it as your interview with the admissions office. Be open. Be reflective. Find your individual voice and express it.
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. They are about you and your life thus far.

Tuesday, November 9th @ 4pm - Freshman UC Application Overview. Register for this virtual event at this LINK.

Juno, a company that can help you get money cheaper
Cost of College: For information about how to lessen the college debt, check out the partnership between our Inventavation Club and Juno, a company started by a group of millennials from Harvard University who realized young people were drowning in student debt and wanted to do something about it.
They realized that if they got a bunch of people together, they could use the power of group buying (similar to a Groupon or Hotels.com) to negotiate a better deal for everyone. They’ve done it successfully for three years now and opened up the negotiation group to anyone who’s interested.Anyone who wants to join can do so on their website. It takes 2 minutes and just needs some basic info. It’s also totally free and there’s no commitment to take any of their deals. It’s just another option on the table for saving money. Just to name a few things you'll find are interest rate discounts for undergrads and grads, 0.25% rate discount for refinance and up to $2,000 signing bonus for people who refinance.
They also have several scholarships including a monthly one for $1,000 that can be applied to current tuition or towards your existing loans if you already have some. On their website, you can explore multiple other scholarships.

Kenyon College by Heather Tran
The town Gamier, Ohio is home to the beautiful campus of Kenyon College. The nearest city is Columbus, the capital of Ohio, 50 miles away. The liberal arts college has a very small student body with less than two thousand students. Although Kenyon is home to a small number of students, it doesn’t lack diversity. It is a private, four-year school that offers a wide range of majors. Top areas of study include social sciences, english language and literature, and biological and biomedical sciences. They have a diverse set of study options including internships, double majors, internships, and study abroad programs.
Kenyon College does not have an application fee and the SAT/ACT are considered, but not required. The culture around the college is very community and academically focused. There is small, but thriving Greek life there. Not only does it have Greek life, it has a litany of clubs for all interests, some of which are beekeeping and squash clubs. The school also is working hard to become greener. They encourage students to practice sustainability.
This liberal arts school is in NCAA Division III and competes in 22 intercollegiate sports. They have a small, but mighty, sports presence with a total of 60 national trophies.
