Teasley Vision Statement:
Fancy Nancy Word of the Week
Each week we will focus on a new vocabulary word in our classroom. We will call them the "Fancy Nancy Word of the Week". Please try to use these words at home too!!
This week's word is:
-
Rigorous: extremely thorough, exhaustive, or accurate
Family Information Guide and Clinic Card
Please be sure to return the family information guide and clinic card that came home on the first day inside the Cobb folder. Please return them ASAP.
Important Transportation Information
- No changes of transportation can be accepted over email. Changes during the school day must be made in writing to the office and received by 1:30 each day.
• Any kids staying after school for clubs must have a written transportation change for that day. Please send a note EACH DAY that they are staying for ASP enrichment. This cuts down on confusion if there is ever a substitute teacher in the class.
Thank you!
Class Blog
The more you read, the more you know... - Dr. Seuss
Are you reading every night to your child? Research is showing us that children who read, or is read to for 15-20 minutes nightly with their parents have a better chance for academic success than those who don’t. Parents who read with their children are modeling that reading is enjoyable and important. Reading helps build their knowledge of the world around them, their exposure to new and interesting words, and builds their academic growth in all academic areas. So encourage your child to put down the ipad or phone, go get a book and blanket. Then then take 15-20 minutes to snuggle together and enjoy a book.
Here is a list of 10 reading benefits:
1. Mental stimulation
2. Stress Reduction
3. Knowledge
4. Vocabulary expansion
5. Memory Improvement
6. Stronger Analytical Thinking skills
7. Improved focus/concentration
8. Better writing skills
9. Tranquility
10. Free Entertainment

Learning for the Week:
This learning unit, first grade will be focusing on 3 key concepts. These concepts are change, perspective, and causation. One way to practice this at home is to link these words to our everyday life. For instance, play “cause and effect” with your child. Give them instances where something has occurred because it is changing (effected) by something else. Ex: ‘effect’ My ice cream is melting. What’s the cause? ‘It is a hot day.” “I didn’t eat my ice cream fast enough.”
IB Unit: Where we are in Place and Time.
Central Idea: Pioneers Drive Change
In our first unit, we will focus on the IB Learner Profile Traits that make a pioneer. We will apply the IB Learner Profile traits to our participation in our Reader’s and Writer’s workshop.
Math: Math Workshop, Number Talks, counting to 120.
Word Work: We will be reviewing sounds and practicing our handwriting.
Ask me what I’m learning!

Writing- How do I write an opinion writing piece?
Daily 5/Language Arts- What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction text? What are the differences between books that give information and books that tell stories?

Central Idea: Pioneers drive change.
Lines of Inquiry:
-Aspects of the past still influence us, today.
-People can be influenced to make changes.
-Some practices and behaviors have remained and stayed the same.
Teacher goals for students’ learning:
-Students will be able to identify the impact historical figures have had on our lives (how have our lives changed because of these historical figures).
-Students will be able to identify what motivated these pioneers to want to make a change.
-Students will be able to identify how these pioneers exhibited the IB profile traits.
How can you help at home?
- Encourage your child to research the historical figures we are learning about, as well as, any who have helped shape our history.
- Is there an injustice around you? What would you do to change or improve the injustice/situation?
Learner Profile Connection
This unit we will focus on being a risk-taker, principled, and a communicator.
Encourage them at home to be risk-taker by:
*Encourage your child to try new things- new foods, a new ride, a new drink, or a new activity.
*Encourage them to share their opinion with others
*Be careful to explain to your child the difference between being a risk taker and doing dangerous things.
Encourage them at home to be principled by:
*Encourage your child to create a game with rules, then encourage them to stick to those rules.
*Encourage your child to play games where there are teams-learning to work with people is just as important as working alone.
*Talk with your child about being a good winner or loser. It’s not about the outcome of the game, it’s about the fun!
Encourage them at home to be communicator by:
*Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives via email, letter, or phone.
* Talk with your child- ask them questions that causes them to give more than a simple response. Ex: “If you enough money to buy anything you would like, what would you buy and why?”
*Have your child explain the steps to a problem/situation. For example: How to make a PBJ.
