Frosty First Graders
December 1, 2018
BBBBBRRRRRRRR....It's COLD outside
Please remember that first grade DOES go out for recess if the temperature and wind chill are above 32 degrees. Please dress your child appropriately. Make sure they have a coat/jacket to wear on these cold mornings. They won't be able to stay inside just because they didn't bring a coat/jacket.
Geometry
Yes, that is right! First graders are doing Geometry. They will learn about edges, faces, and vertices. Recognizing 2D and 3D shapes are also part of this unit. The students will learn the name of some shapes that they don't see very often too. Your child will be able to sort shapes based on certain characteristics of a shape.
Reading/Writing
First Graders are mastering the art of complete sentences. They are also learning about adjectives and adverbs, along with reviewing verbs and nouns. In writing they know how to add details to their sentences to make them more interesting.
Social Studies
Our students are learning about different cultures and traditions. Students will be able to explain the way folktales and legends reflect beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of communities. Students will obtain information about holidays and celebrations in order to understand how culture shapes communities.
Tie My Shoes
Several more of our first graders are able to tie their own shoes. We still have many more that need to keep practicing. We are going to set our goal for the end of the first semester. Hopefully all first graders will be able to tie shoes by this time. It really is a skill that they need everyday. Being able to do it independently makes children feel successful. When they always have to rely on their friends becomes frustrating for them. Thank you so much for helping out with this skill.
Field Trip
First grade is going to the Holifield Outdoor Learning Center on January 29th. The teachers will be sending home a slip to sign for your child and a form if you would like to volunteers. Each classroom teacher will put the forms sent back into a basket and choose 2 parents for each classroom to attend. The Outdoor Learning Center is very firm on how many volunteers we can bring.
GOING HOME A DIFFERENT WAY
We totally understand that plans change as you are walking out the door or at the last minute. Please call the front office if you change the way your child goes home after you have dropped them off in the morning. If you know before your child goes to school you can always WRITE A NOTE. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT send an email or leave us a phone message. If we are absent your child might not get to the correct place. Also, we may not get the email or message in time. Thanks for your understanding. Your child's safety is our main concern.
