What is figure of speech?
Figure of speech is a word or phrase used in a non-literal sense to add rhetorical force to a spoken or written passage.
Types of Figure of Speech
Some of the most common figures of speech are:
- simile
- metaphor
- hyperbole
- alliteration
- irony
- onomatopoeia
- personification
- pun
Example(s)
simile - The girl ran as fast as a cheetah.
metaphor - My dog is a couch potato.
personification - The trees scream in the raging wind.
hyperbole - Yesterday I ran about 30 miles!
pun - The two pianist had a good marriage. They always were in a chord.
alliteration - Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
