CLASSIC Student's Bell Schedule
New Classic schedule starts on Monday 04/05/2021
State Testing
We are excited that this year the state is not mandating the lengthy CAASPP tests in ELA and math or the CAST in science. They are instead allowing flexibility for districts to select and administer their own standardized assessments. VUSD elementary and middle schools have decided that students in grades 3-8 will take the FastBridge in ELA and math in lieu of the CAASPP SBAC test. Students in grades 3-8 who are identified through their IEP as needing an alternative assessment will take the CAASPP California Alternative Assessment (CAA) for both ELA and math. VUSD will not be administering a science test this year. The FastBridge ELA and math assessments will be administered in the same manner that they were administered for both the Fall and Winter assessments. We will be administering the Fastbridge ELA the week of May 10-14, Fastbridge Math the week of May 17-21, and make-ups the following week. Attached are the notifications that were sent home to all families. If you have any questions regarding this testing, please feel free to reach out to us.

7th grade Wildcat Families
Starting the week of May 3rd, all 7th grade students will be participating in Check your Mood Week where they will receive the SOS Signs of Suicide® presentation during their Science class. The goal of the program is to:
- To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness, and help them assess whether or not they may have symptoms consistent with depression
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in a friend
- To impress upon teens that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
Trained Clinicians from North County Lifeline will be in contact with any student who flags a friend or themselves to determine what supports the student needs. If you DO NOT want your student to participate in this program, please CLICK HERE to complete the form and return to me at NancyLicona@vistausd.org.

School ID and Picture Orders
ID's were handed out to Classic students on Wednesday 04/07/2021 during their 8th period. If your student is in the Classic Learning model, had a picture taken but did not receive their ID, please call the office.
If your student is in the Virtual learning model, please call the office to schedule an appointment to pick up your student's ID.

Cameras On!
- Turn your cameras on during specific portions of the lesson as determined by the teacher.
- Respond verbally or in writing when prompted.
- Utilize the Chat feature appropriately to communicate with teachers and peers.
It is crucial that cameras are on and that students are actively participating in class in order to support engagement, community-building, and motivation for learning. We need your support as parents/guardians to stress the importance of these expectations with our Wildcats. Students who have particular issues having their cameras on should reach out to their teachers.

Hapara News
Exciting news! We are pleased to announce that a very helpful tool called Hapara is now working with our Canvas and is once again available for our teachers. Hapara is an important tool to assist teachers with digital citizenship and classroom management. This tool allows teachers to monitor what students are accessing during class on their Chromebooks. We will be supporting our teachers in setting it up for their classes, and we wanted our parents to be aware of this tool and what it does. We have attached letters that detail the privacy policy and how we are adhering to the ethical monitoring policy for this instructional tool. Please let us know if you have any questions.

High School Information:
Attendance
Attendance is key to student success! Please encourage your student to sign on to virtual learning every day and on time. Teachers are required by Senate Bill 98 to take attendance every period, every day.
Students are considered "present" if they log in to their scheduled Live Zoom meetings each day (synchronous) AND if they log on and complete any work during their Learning Options & Work Time (asynchronous) periods.
If students complete work early in a Learning Options & Work Time period, they can log in early for a different period and continue independently with their work in that class. The intention is for each student to log in to each of their classes every day and make progress on their classwork.
New Attendance Codes:
A = absent
1 = present for a live Zoom meeting
2 = present for an asynchronous period (by logging into the class on Canvas and working on classwork)
Remember, absences must be cleared within 72 hours (3 school days) after the student returns to school. If your student was accidentally marked absent or if you are planning a trip in which your student will miss 5 or more school days, please notify the attendance two weeks in advance to set up an independent study contract.
If you have any concerns, please communicate with your student's teacher or with our attendance office (760) 726-8003 x63020 or yeseniabeas@vistausd.org
