IMLEA Monday Minute

October 23, 2017

The Newsletters are Coming, the Newsletters are Coming!

This week we will be mailing/sending via pdf the fall edition of our bi-annual newsletter, "Middling Around". We had so much great content submitted and conference highlights to include that we expanded it to 16 pages. Watch your mailbox and/or inbox for its arrival!

The Fund for Teachers Grant Opportunity

We are fortunate in Indiana to be eligible for Lilly's Teacher Creativity Grants, and I recently learned of another similar opportunity. The Fund for Teachers is a nationwide program for teachers to self-design projects for personal renewal, which can include travel. Although this webpage shows a starting date for applications of October 1, 2018, it is actually open now, and proposals are due by January 31, 2018. You can see details about past winners from Indiana here.

Free AMLE Webinar on Student Engagement, October 25

Master teacher Heather Wolpert-Gawron, the @tweenteacher, will present a live webinar on student engagement this Wednesday at 4 pm ET. Anyone can become an associate member of AMLE (Association of Middle Level Educators) for free and have access to some resources and webinars. Those who pay for a membership also have access to archived webinars, additional content, and other benefits. AMLE membership information is available at this link

Heather is a frequent blogger (including for Edutopia), podcaster, author, and proponent of problem-based learning.

WEBSITE OF THE WEEK: Wonder Portrait Creator

The film version of the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio will be released on November 17; many schools are planning field trips to theaters already. In addition, kindness campaigns are being held in conjunction with the theme, "Choose Kind." Students might enjoy this portrait creator, complete with a precept, or, they could create their own.

Middle Level Schools on Twitter

We are still adding to the twitter list of Indiana middle level schools, primarily IMLEA members. We know that there are many more schools with twitter accounts. By clicking on this link, you can easily see the tweets from other schools, and perhaps get some ideas that you can use. Please contact Susie Highley if you would like to be added to this list.

Session Links and Evaluation Form

Just a reminder that you can access presentations from our Sept. 17-18 conference using this link. We also appreciate all of those who have completed the evaluation form, and encourage others to fill it out. We will use that data at our next board meeting as we move ahead with plans for next year's conference. This is the final Monday minute that will include these links, but they will still be available on our website.
