The Fairview Connection

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
It was a short, yet productive week at Fairview! Our staff and students are working hard as they are now engaged across all curricular areas, and we are happy to report that we’ve had an incredibly smooth start to this school year after three full school weeks. Next week, there are two opportunities for parents and guardians to get involved here at school. First, on Monday evening, we will hold our first PTO meeting of the school year starting at 6:30 pm in the LRC (Learning Resource Center). The main entrance doors will be open for parents to enter Fairview and we hope you’ll consider attending. Then on Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 pm, we will be hosting Camp Fairview where families will engage together with several camp-themed literacy activities around the school. This is an event for families to enjoy together. All students should be accompanied by an adult throughout the evening. Click here for more details about Camp Fairview!
Thank you to all families who signed their children up for participation in one of our Fairview clubs last week. Parents will be hearing from club sponsors within the next week if their child’s name was drawn for a club. Unfortunately, each year we are not able to fit all interested students into a club as we reach capacity in each club. That said, if we have to turn someone away this year, we put them on a list for next year and ensure that they are selected for a club the next time around. Thank you for your understanding!
As shared last week, for your planning purposes, our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, November 1st (8:05 am - 3:35 pm), Thursday, November 10th (3:40-6:40 pm), and Tuesday, November 15th (3:40-6:40 pm). We have received feedback from some parents that having an option for a remote conference using Zoom is a help to them from a convenience and/or childcare perspective. Other parents have shared that in-person conferences are preferred for a variety of reasons. In light of this feedback, we plan to offer both types of conference, however, from a teacher perspective, it is helpful to cluster Zoom conferences together because they prepare differently for each type of conference. In order to help determine roughly how many Zoom conference slots we would like to make available, please fill out this short survey separately for each of your children who attend Fairview if you haven’t done so already.
Safety is always our top priority at Fairview. One way you can keep your children safe each day is by making sure they do not arrive at Fairview before 8:35 am. Our supervisors report for duty at 8:35 am, so students who are dropped off sooner than that time are not supervised. If a bus arrives prior to 8:35 am, the drivers know to wait for our supervisors to arrive before having students exit the bus, but we have seen an increase in students being dropped off or arriving on the property before our supervision starts. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe!
We are almost fully staffed at Fairview, but we are still looking for a Kids Corner before and after school care assistant. If you or someone you know is interested in working in this important role, please email me or have the interested candidate reach out to me for more details (dophus@d57.org). We’ve had parents, grandparents, retired adults, and college-aged students all fill this role in the past and we are hoping to add one more supervisor to our team. Thank you for considering or passing this job opportunity along to those who might be interested.
Thank you for taking the time to read through today’s newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend ahead!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal

BUS BULLETIN
Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.
