All Things EQ Message (from the founder Danna Evans):
The motto next week is:
I don't brag because I am happy with myself.
On social media, bragging is commonplace. However, despite the prominence of bragging, the results are the same. People don't enjoy being around people who brag. There are many studies that state how we feel worse after just 20 minutes of being on social media. We may compare ourselves and feel we don't measure up. It's difficult to remember that people only post the best picture and not the whole picture.
A police officer at a Not My Kid assembly described it the best when he said, "Our kids compare their real lives to other people's highlight reels." Helping our children understand this concept now before they are immersed in the world of social media can be helpful. Bragging can be damaging to both the student doing the bragging and the student hearing the bragging. The student hearing the bragging may internalize it and feel insecure about their own abilities. While the student doing the bragging is unsuccessfully seeking approval and more likely collecting disdain from other students rather than admiration.
Consider bringing up this topic at home. By bringing up bragging prior to having any problem with this topic, you are simply having a discussion, but bring it up when you need to, and it feels like a lecture and can be harder for kids to hear. Besides, if you bring it up now, your child will be ready when they feel the burn of another's brag because they will have the E.Q. skills to sidestep that self-doubt and the empathy to understand that the person bragging is simply searching for approval and not a reflection of your child's talents and abilities.
Confidence is quiet. Insecurities are loud. -Unknown
For younger kids, here are some picture books that help cover this topic:
• Well, I Can Top That!, by Julia Cook
• I'm the Best, by Lucy Cousins.
• The Biggest Brag By The Berenstain Bears, Mike Berenstain
Thanks so much for being a part of the E.Q. Parent Community!
