Preschool Press

Favorite Authors

During the last two weeks the children enjoyed learning about transportation. We learned about different modes of transportation we can see in Fishers from garbage trucks to bikes.
Our next theme is favorite authors. We will use books from the authors Eric Carle and Laura Numeroff. We will focus on the animals from Eric Carle's book Head to Toe. A yummy snack of pancakes during our week of Laura Numeroff books will be served. Be sure to look for a food permission slip this week in your child's backpack regarding the pancakes.

Weekly Skills

During the next few weeks we will work on a variety of preschool skills. These skills are modified to make sure they are appropriate for the variety of ages we have in our class. Below is a list of some of the skills we will work on during our Favorite Authors theme.
  1. Label and identify the sound letter Kk makes.
  2. Rote count 1-20
  3. Demonstrating a 2-4 step play sequence
  4. Attending to a task for 3-7 minutes
  5. Labeling 6-8 body parts
  6. Print Awareness
  7. Reading a basic tally graph to see who has more/less
  8. Identifying the bigger/smaller number with numbers 1-5.

Home Activities

As we work on a variety of skills during the next two weeks we look for further reinforcement of skills at home. This continued encouragement of concepts will increase understanding and application of those skills. Below are activities to do at home.
  1. Use the attached handouts in the e-mail to reinforce skills we have worked on each week.
  2. Make cookies, cupcakes, muffins or pancakes to further extend on our Laura Numeroff books.
  3. Have a dance time as a family. After dancing talk about what body parts you moved.
  4. We will be making Gak this week. It is slimy and made from glue and Borax. Feel free to make it at home too. We will send home the recipe after we make it at school!
  5. As you read books with your child you can ask them a variety of where, what, when and why questions. You can also point out to them that you are reading from the top of the page to the bottom, label letters and then explain that letters make words.

  1. Kindergarten Round-Up is scheduled for Thursday, April 17, at all HSE elementary schools. If your child will be attending kindergarten next year, you are invited to attend at the elementary school your child will be attending. You and your child will be able to tour the school, meet the kindergarten teachers, and take a bus ride around the parking lot. If you are unable to attend, contact the school your child will be attending to inquire about an alternate time to complete registration. Even though your child is enrolled in the early childhood program, your child is not registered for kindergarten until you have completed the forms. If you are unsure which elementary school your child should attend, you can go to the HSE website Click on the tab "Our District." On the left hand side, you will see the links "Maps and Boundaries" and "Subdivision-School Finder." Both of those will help you find the correct elementary school your child should attend. If you have questions, please let me know.
  2. Extended School Day Times: Starting next Monday, March 3, the AM class times are 8:17 to 11:35. The PM class times are 12:22 to 3:40. This change will be in effect through Friday, May 30. If you have not received it already, you should be receiving a Skylert message that details these changes. If you have any questions, please let me know.
