Creating Opportunities Together

A Thought or Two From Mr. Nieslanik

We need to celebrate our students, and all things good they are accomplishing:

  • 54% of grades earned for Quarter One were As or Bs
  • 7% of grades earned were Ns (Which may not necessarily be a bad mark, as an N means there is no evidence towards a learning target, yet)
  • 13% of marks earned were Incomplete marks, this translates to some work was complete but not enough to receive a letter grade.
  • 84% of students received at least one A
  • 69% of students received at least one B
  • 47 students participated on the stage or behind the scenes in our fall production, "Midsummer Jersey"
  • 48 students participated in our award-winning marching band
  • Our daily attendance rate for Quarter One was 93% with over 85% of students maintaining a 90% attendance rate or higher
  • Over 225 students participated as Skyhawks representing SRHS in athletic competition.

I highlight these points as the vast, vast majority of students are setting the bar high. They are excelling in the classroom, and in activities. We often get stuck in the weeds and watch the same fight video over and over and over again, assuming that there are fights every day and our students are not engaging in their community. We need to celebrate all that is good, expect all of our students to reach for the stars and to be the best they can be. If your child is one that has struggled as we have returned to in-person instruction, there is time and hope! This transition has been difficult for many. We have both academic and social-emotional supports to support our students, please reach out to your child's counselor at First Name_Last Name@ beaverton.k12.or.us.

Until next time,

David

Setting our School Goals for the Next Five Years

A committee of parents, students and staff are working to update and redefine our goals and core values for the next five years. The work to define our Mission, Vision and Core Values is complex work, and necessary. If this work interests you we would love to have your voice part of the conversation. We meet once a month and only have six meetings remaining! Please reach out to Principal David Nieslanik at David_Nieslanik@beaverton.k12.or.us if you would like to participate.

Our work in November and December is to lay out a plan for a shared vision of "School Readiness" and "School Identify". In the next edition of The Quill we will share our work to date and ask for feedback.

Why is this work happening now? We are at a crossroads. Over the last five years we have faced school closure, interruption of in-person instruction, a transition with the building of Mountainside High School, and put in place our goals for the past five years (welcoming a more diverse community, redefining our Career Pathways, making the IB program more accessible and inclusive, and adding the IB Career-Related Program.) It is time to articulate our outcomes for the next five years.

Winter Athletics and Activities

With the ending of the fall athletics/activities season, we wanted to reach out and provide some reminders/updates regarding spectator expectations for winter.

Reminders/Updates:

  • Spectators are required to wear masks at all indoor.
    • Spectators also are encouraged to maintain at least 6 feet of distance between families/groups, to the extent possible.
  • Because of social distancing concerns, student attendees at basketball or wrestling events are limited to students of the participating schools. Other students from other schools may not attend.
  • Elementary and middle school students must be accompanied and sit by a parent/guardian.

BSD Family Pass Policy (purchased at school athletic offices):

  • All family passes must be presented in person. A photo of a family pass will only be accepted with accompanying ID, showing a name matching the family name on the pass.
  • Family passes are limited to 5 people per game.
  • Students cannot show a family pass for entry unless accompanied by a parent/adult family member.

ASB/ID Card Policy

  • Students must have their actual ID cards with ASB stickers to gain entry to the event at no cost. Students without an ASB sticker will need to pay the student entrance fee.
  • Only students from those schools competing will be allowed entry.

We appreciate your support, as following these expectations allows our teams to be able to compete this winter season.
