Question of the Month

This month at the gym, and through my Twitter account I received a couple of random questions and have had the pleasure of meeting a couple cool people out of it. The best question that stuck with me this month was from a young guy named Kyle. This guy was 15 years old and had just started back at the gym. Kyle was a little over weight and he asked me how he could shed a couple pounds quick before a vacation he was going on. He explained he was working on cardio and abs all the time, and I could not help but laugh. Cardio is good, but will not get you the results you need by itself. I explained to him that in order to achieve his goals he must first start eating properly and then starting heavy resistance training. Weight training builds muscle and in turn burns fat, and by working those muscles on a regular basis you will raise your metabolic rate throughout the entire day. I saw Kyle after his trip and although he was not completely shredded, he had dropped around 10 pounds which is fantastic!

Favorite Workout of the Month

The Front Squat

The front squat works your quads like crazy! This is a killer exercise for those of you looking to squat, but are having a hard time with form. Using front squats opposed to back squats forces your heels to stay on the floor due to the need to keep your back straight. Therefore it is less likely you will injure your knees. A lot of guys out there I see bending over way too far when they are squatting and this is ruining your knees and is dangerous because if your knee pops, all that weight is coming down on you. Another benefit of the front squat is that it forces you to drop your weight as it is harder to perform than a back squat. I have been killing this exercise on leg day and you should too!

Smoothie of the Month

This smoothie kept me energized all day, and tastes great!

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Smoothie

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

3 tbls of peanut butter

1 cup of milk

1 cup of oats

1 banana

1 half cup of blueberries

Gym Fail of the Month

Every month at the gym I cringe at least one thousand times just from looking at people doing stupid things in the gym. It blows my mind and actually makes me angry when I see someone being stupid at the gym. "Stupid" ranges from leaving weights un-racked when you are done, not wiping down equipment after you sweat all over it, "Ego lifting", talking for a half an hour on a machine when people clearly want to use that machine, and most of all terrible form. People with bad form and habits, can rub off on those who are influential such as the people I try to reach with my Twitter account and my monthly newsletter. Young guys may think that the way these bad people are doing things is right and then start doing exercises that way also. Follow me on Twitter @gymright93 to prevent these things from happening to you! Click this link and see what happens when you ego lift at the gym... enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCfZ4_W5BRI
