Amboy Middle School
June 2022
5TH GRADE FOCUS
Can it really be the end of the year?!?! We are so proud of the enormous gains our 5th graders have made academically, socially, and emotionally. They are ready to rock 6th grade! We have lots of fun things planned in June to keep kids engaged until the last day! We hope that all of you have a wonderful, restful summer!
Here's what's coming up:
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are finishing up our Units 11 and 12 on the Constitution, how our government works, and westward expansion.
READING
We will be starting June off by presenting plays. The kids have worked very hard, and it should prove to be exciting and entertaining! We will finish off the year with novel studies. Students will be applying all the strategies we taught them and working through activities all while reading high interest books!
MATH
We will be working on division and decimals along with some review of key 5th grade concepts.
LANGUAGE ARTS
We will be sharing narrative stories, reviewing grammar rules, and writing from different points of view.
6TH GRADE SUMMARY
Summer is almost here!
With summer approaching, it is important to think of ways to keep students engaged in learning even when they are not in class.
Encourage your student to read independently. Evidence suggests that students that regularly read perform better academically. Summer is a great time to do some serious reading.
Encourage students to work independently on iReady. The "My Path" program constructs lessons specifically suited to challenge and encourage academic growth for individual students. Most lessons and instructions take between 10-18 minutes. Encourage students to work toward growth in Reading and Math.
Kickball is happening! Each year 6th grade students compete in an annual kickball tournament. The event celebrates a job well done on State Testing and the coming end of the school year. For students to be eligible to participate, students must have grades of C or better on all classwork and no missing assignments. Work hard to stay current on grades and assignments and enjoy the friendly competition. Encourage your student to work hard in class so they can have some fun competing with classmates to celebrate a job well done.
7TH GRADE SCOOP
In both math classes we have finished up Unit 7, Angles, Triangles, and Prisms. We are currently working in Unit 8 Probability and Sampling. Since the school year is ending we will only be doing the first 9 lessons in Unit 8. They should have all their work into me by June 13th so I can start posting their final grades.
HISTORY
We will be finishing the year by studying the industry and economy of Washington. We will have a final project about an impactful person or event in our state.
ELA
ELA will be finishing up the year with our novel study of "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. We have a short end of the year project and the movie to end both the year and the reading.
SCIENCE
The scientists are currently researching and creating presentations about genetic disorders. After the presentations we will briefly learn a bit about waves. Finally, the 7th graders will transition into 8th graders, and we will all enjoy sunshine for a couple of months.
8TH GRADE UPDATE
June conferences: We are conferencing with those students who are two or more below grade level, mainly to suggest possible summer activities to assist your child. You should receive an email by this time. After conferences, we will send home to each child's parent a snapshot report on where your student is at based on i-Ready and other data. We will put in an envelope and give it to students by June 7th. Be sure to check their backpacks or ask if they received an envelope for parents/guardians. Check out these links for summer offerings: Extended Learning Opportunities and/or Resources from National PTA.
Grades: Since we are coming to the end of the school year soon, it is vital that students get any late work in and keep current with their new assignments. In order to be ready for the 8th Grade Celebration in June, we will be needing all students to get any and all assignments turned in by June 9th. This way we have time to grade, figure their GPA for the second semester, and get Certificates printed for them by Celebration Day!
EAGLE'S NEST SEL CENTER YEAR END SUMMARY
So far this year, 32% of Amboy Middle School students have accessed the services of Amboy's SEL Center in 692 visits to the Eagle's Nest. Of these visits, 88%, or 608 visits, were requested by the students. The remaining students were sent by teachers for behavior issues like disruption, defiance, and disrespect.
Depending on the SEL Center's availability, additional students have chosen to use the Eagle's Nest during their recess to create uplifting posters to hang in the hallways or make cards to give to staff or fellow students.
You may remember that SEL Centers (Social Emotional Learning Centers) were new to all middle schools this year. Next year, SEL Centers in our primary schools will be open.
SEL Centers provide a space to teach and empower students to regulate emotions, learn coping strategies, practice alternative behaviors, and restore calm. Students who are sent by their teachers for misbehavior learn self-management skills. Some students just come to the Eagle's Nest for a quiet space to do their work. All Eagle's Nest visitors work collaboratively with SEL Center staff to return as quickly as possible to the classroom environment.
