UTSA to launch Chemical Engineering program in Fall 2017

Thanks to a $1 million gift from former Valero CEO Bill Klesse, UTSA is slated to offer Chemical Engineering as an undergraduate option beginning in the Fall of 2017. UTSA’s chemical engineering students will have the option to specialize in one of five areas: petroleum and energy systems, environmental engineering, materials engineering, bioengineering, or technology management.

“Chemical engineers are in high in-demand in Texas and have a great positive impact on their environments. Our country needs more engineering and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving,” says Klesse.

Congratulations to the College of Engineering for meeting the needs of our students and our society! How exciting!

New Engineering building to open on campus by 2020!

Designs are underway for a new Engineering building to open by Fall 2020! The newest building to campus since the North Paseo Building in 2014 will house classrooms, study spaces, teaching laboratories and research facilities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Many of the laboratories will be surrounded in glass so students and visitors walking by can see what’s going on, a concept referred to as science on display. Another innovative aspect in the building will be the Engineering Maker Space, a 17,000 square foot area where engineering students can design, test and fabricate their capstone senior design projects. They will have access to various tools, materials and storage space for their projects.
