Congratulations to Hazel Green High School's Teacher and Support Person of the Year!

Mr. Jeremy Ebert and Mr. Carey Jones were honored as Hazel Green High School's Teacher and Support Person of the Year! We are so thankful for their hard work and dedication!


Mr. Ebert is over our Medical Academy. He oversees HGHS interns at local hospitals and dentist offices. He is a tech savy teacher, incorporating BYOD and learning management systems in his lessons. Mr. Ebert also coaches soccer.


Mr. Jones works tirelessly as our plant manager to make sure our students have a safe learning environment, often working late or coming in on the weekends.


We are blessed to have them both!

HGHS Welcomes Walmart to the Community!

We are excited for newest community partner, Walmart, to open this Wednesday! Mr. Long attended Friends and Family Night over the weekend, where he was presented with a check for $1,000 to go to the purchase of new computers. We are so appreciative and look forward to long and prosperous partnership!

ROTC Ball

Hazel Green ROTC hosted their annual ball Saturday night. The students dressed in formal attire and danced the night away...including the Cupid Shuffle with Mr. Long!

National Athletic Trainers Month

March is National Athletic Trainer's Month! Tweet @HHSportsCenter with how much your athletic trainers mean to you and HGHS. In honor of National Athletic Trainer's Month, look for weekly trivia questions @TOCSports1 and @HHSportsCenter to be entered to win weekly prize packages and the chance to win Alabama Hammers tickets. Questions can also be answered in the athletic training room with Wes and Nikki.

Baseball and Softball News

Varsity Baseball swept the day Saturday with wins over Decatur and Ardmore! Will Stewart struck out 13 batters and David Anderson had a huge go ahead RBI in game one. Freshman Baseball got a 2-0 win in their first game! Congratulations to Braxton Elledge who threw complete no-hitter!


Varsity Softball went 1-2 and JV went 2-1 at the Auburn Tournament this past weekend with homeruns for Katie Smith, Haven Hester, Courtney Hill and Aubrey Lewis! Next up, the girls have road game at Lawrence County this afternoon. Go Trojans!

Math Team Advances in State

The HGHS Math Team’s performance on the comprehensive exam of the 2015 Alabama Statewide High School Math Contest has qualified them for an invitation to the second round of the contest on April 11th at the University of North Alabama! In round two, the students will answer questions on geometry, algebra II and trigonometry. Good luck, guys!

Robotics Team Makes it to Final Four

Congratulations to the HGHS Robotics Team for making it all the way to the State Semifinals in their very first year of competition! Great job, Mr. Sims and team!

Trojans Continue to get Basketball Honors

The Trojans were showing out at the Senior Basketball Showcase Staurday night! Ethan Stair and Rayven Pearson BOTH were top scorers for their teams!


AL.com named it Power 20 Rankings this morning, and the Lady Trojans finshed up 5th in the state!

Current Announcements

Rising Freshman Registration - If you were not able to attend, visit our Freshman Registration Page. Counselors will be at MVMS on March 30-31 to register students for next year. Schedules will not be changed in the fall, so it's important to make an informed decision now.


Basketball Cheerleading Tryout Clinic will be held March 30 - April 2 from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Tryouts will be held April 3 from 4:00 to 6:00pm in the HGHS cafeteria. The cheers and dance for the tryout will be taught and practiced during the week, March 30 – April 2. Email rmims@madison.k12.al.us or visit the Basketball Cheer website for more information.


Wendy's Night for Special Olympics - Eat at Wendy's on March 12th from 5:00-8:00pm and a percentage of your bill will be donated to the Special Olympics! This is for the Wendy's located at 2800 S. Memorial Parkway, Huntsville, AL 35801.

Youth Speed and Agility School -
All male athletes who are currently in 4th-7th grade are invited to attend the 2nd Annual Hazel Green Speed and Agility School. Join the football coaches every Tuesday and Thursday night from 5:30-6:30pm in the football complex to work on quickness, proper form, overall athleticism and work ethic. The school runs from January 7th-March 20th, and the cost is FREE!

Prom

Prom will be April 24th. Tickets on sale now for $75 per person.


Girls Dress Code:

1. Excessive cleavage is not allowed.

2. Dress may be backless as long as it is not cut below the waist.

3. Navel may not be exposed.

4. No pinning will be allowed as an alteration for a dress if, without the pinning, the dress does not meet dress code.

5. Dress should not be excessively short or pulled up when dancing.


Boys Dress Code:

1. Suits or tuxedos should be worn.

3. Shirts must be buttoned up to the second button from the collar.

4. Pants should fit properly on the hip and not sag below the waistline.

Special Programs

College Admissions Speaker - Randolph School will be presenting Barbara Long, M.D., Ph. D. , Harvard alumna, Admissions interviewer, and noted author on Wednesday, March 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the Thurber Arts Center, Garth Campus 4915 Garth Road Huntsville, AL. The presentation topic is “Handling the Roller Coaster Emotions of the College Admissions Process.“ An invitation has been extended to our students and parents that would like to attend. Applying to college can be a stressful experience, whether one is seeking admission in a very competitive school or one in which the odds are more favorable.


North Alabama Youth Leadership Board allows you to network with prominent business leaders of Huntsville, learn about issues in our community and give back to the community. To participate, students must agree to serve one full term on the Youth Leadership Board (September 2015 through April 2016) and attend board meetings once a month. They must also participate in partnerships with our affiliates: HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, National Children’s Advocacy Center and North Alabama Autism Society. The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) application season is now open. SEAP is an established DoD Outreach internship. An eligible candidate for SEAP is any high school student with an interest and aptitude for STEM. The summer internships duration is eight weeks and is designed to engage students in hands-on activities and student/mentor relationships that encourage careers in science and engineering. This program allows students to apprentice in fields of their choice with experienced scientists and engineers. Students are treated as research assistants. The Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program

is an Army Educational Outreach program that enables students to experience science and engineering in real-world Army laboratory settings. The AMRDEC GEMS program is focused on age/grade-appropriate hands‐on activities in areas such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computational science, physics, optics, robotics, chemistry, and others. Students receive a stipend to participate in this one‐week program. The 2015 stipend amount for all GEMS participants is $100. Eligibility Requirements: Students in grades 8th - 12th, who are U.S. citizens with a valid SSN Dates: June 8-12 and June 15-19. Applications available online.


US Air Force Engineering/STEM Camp - The United States Air Force Academy and Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) offers an Engineering/STEM camp designed for high school students who excel in math, science and technology courses and are interested in pursuing engineering, architecture, or a related field in college or a military service academy. This one week camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado is high energy and hands-on for students from across the country and around the world. Some of the activities during the week-long camp include: place a concrete beam and destructive testing, water purification, build an irrigation system, material testing, shed construction, AFA laboratory tours, problem-solving activities and many more. This year's camp runs from June 25 to July 1, 2015, information on the application process and eligibility can be found here.


Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Information from previous newsletters remains posted in Current Announcements until it expires. I welcome parents to send scores, pictures and updates from any Hazel Green sports or activities. We can't brag about it if we don't know about it. Scholarship and college visit information will only be posted once, and then it can be found on separate webpages for General Scholarships, College and University Scholarships, and School Visits and Special Programs.


Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.

Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.

Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. First Priority/FCS
meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.


Parenting Assistance Line:
PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.


Recycle:
Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.


Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
