Get Ready for the 3rd Annual Pirate Cove Book Swap

As the new year begins many of us find ourselves cleaning out to make room for all those new holiday gifts. As you organize, keep in mind that The PES Pirate Cove will be having our 3rd Annual Seusstastic Book Swap during “Read Across America Week.” Start gathering your gently used children's books for the book exchange. We will begin collecting books on February 22 in the media center. Students will start swapping during their media resource classes February 28 through March 8.

STARBOOKS Party January 15!

Did you meet your AR goals for the second nine weeks? Check your progress and ask your teacher to see if you are invited to the STARBOOKS Party on January 15. If you didn't make it this time, resolve to meet your goal and join us for the next party.

Bubble Gum Days - February 2-12

During this week students are invited to chew bubble gum during their media resource time. This holiday is traditionally a library fundraiser. This year we will collect quarters during media resource and use the proceeds to purchase new Bubble Gum books for the media center. Our collection is small and the best part of bubble gum days are the stories we read. Look for bubble gum fun ideas in next month's Pirate Cove Connection.

SSYRA JR. Reading Rewards for Second Grade

The newest reading award program sponsored by FAME is the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr.! It will be for second grade students who choose to participate. We have modeled the program on the SSYRA incentives we use with the 3rd-5th grade students.

Read each of the 15 SSYRA Jr. books and take an AR test. If you pass the test with a 70% or higher, fill out the SSYRA Jr. test slip and turn it in to the white basket in the media center. Your name will be added to the poster in the media center. Rewards will be placed in your teacher’s box. If a book is below your AR reading range, you may need to get your teacher’s permission to take the test. Rewards are below:

Birthday Book Club

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth.

To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardback book. This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves. For more information, contact the media center.
