Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
As we finish the 2017-2018 school year, it has been a pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. We have done this as a school with special events like Field Day and the Awards Ceremony. Many grade levels and classrooms have also done activities and events to demonstrate their learning, such as portfolio parties and poetry readings. I feel lucky to work at a school where parents and staff are eager to honor the efforts of the students.
Lions Park is also fortunate to have an active PTO that provides many clubs, events and other opportunities for families. This would not be possible without a strong executive board. I would like to give special thanks to Jim Aliosius and Elizabeth Grazioso (Co-Presidents), Jen Escobar (Vice-President), Becky Lyne (Treasurer), and Anna Alog (Secretary) for taking on these important roles this year.
Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, May 29th. Students who are absent that day will have their report cards mailed to them. There will be other information in the report card envelopes including MAP scores (all grades), CogAT scores (second grade), enrichment letters (those who are newly qualified at any grade) and other updates from teachers for selected students, such as students in special education and EL. Teachers finish their work year on May 30th. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have questions after that time. I will be in the office during June and August, and I will have access to e-mail during July.
There has been so much learning and progress this year, but the summer can sometimes cause children to regress and lose some of the momentum in their learning. In order to keep your children's skills fresh, it is a good idea to make time for reading every day. It can also be helpful to practice math facts. Road trips or airports can be a good time to do flashcards or verbally practice math facts, with the added benefit that it distracts the kids from asking so frequently how much longer until you arrive! Providing authentic writing opportunities can keep students writing without a fight. You can encourage them to write postcards if you travel. If you don't go anywhere, perhaps children can mail letters to relatives or friends who live out of town. While it is important to continue reading, writing and math in some form over the summer, don't feel you need to spend large amounts of time on schoolwork. Summer is an important time for kids to rest, play and have adventures outside. Whether your family is traveling or staying in the area, I wish you a summer full of fun. We wish all the best to our fifth grade students and those who are moving. We look forward to welcoming all other students back to school on August 14th.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly
