Baptism of the Lord

On this day, we are reminded that God with us has become God like us. His presence among us is not a passive-inactive presence, rather an active presence. He has become too close and familiar with our human conditions. The sinners at Jordan were not left alone. The face of misery has received the face of mercy. At Jordan, those who were once condemned are now redeemed. At Jordan John must cease to baptize because he now baptizes his people with the fullness of his Spirit. We are now regenerated by him. The Father is the witness of this event. The Holy Spirit is the pledge of this regeneration. Let us march ahead for we now have a God like us. He is our brother and we are co-heirs to his kingdom. Letter Sent Home on Wednesday RE: Catholic School Review

January 6th, 2020

Dear Parents of the Madonna Catholic School Community,

During the second week of January (January 15 - 17th, 2020), we will be conducting a School Improvement Process in your school community. The purpose of this process of gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information is to assist in the creation of a strategic plan that continues to move and improve your school in the area of Catholicity. Our ultimate goal is to impact student learning and to ensure that children are successful.

The School Improvement Process was developed by Alberta Education specifically for Catholic Schools. The process involves gathering data and evidence through surveys, interviews, documentation review, and general observations. To make this a success, we need your assistance.

What can you do to help us with the process?

  • Talk to your children about their school experience and how they can contribute to the process by speaking with the review team or by taking a survey during this week. All Grade 4 students will be surveyed and some of them will be chosen to be interviewed.

  • Let the school know that you would be willing to have a short interview with a member of the team. This can be conducted in person or by phone during the day and into the early evening. If interested let the school know your name, contact number, and best time to reach you. You may also send an email to paulc@eics.ab.ca to indicate your interest.

  • As a Madonna parent, please take time to fill out the parent survey at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MCS-parent

Please note, only one survey per household will be registered by the program. The survey is now available until 9:00am Thursday, January 16, 2020.

If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please contact your school administration or contact me directly at 780-449-6455 or by email at paulc@eics.ab.ca.

Yours In Catholic Education,

Paul Corrigan ...................................... Karen Antoniuk

Blanket Exercise: All parents and staff

Parents and Staff of EICS students are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at Central Learning Services (310 Broadview Road) in Sherwood Park on Wednesday, January 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. For further information, please view this KAIROS Blanket Exercise video.

Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.

Please RSVP by Monday, January 13 by filling out this linked Google Form.

We will also have Eva Stang join us at this event. Eva, a Métis Culture and Knowledge Keeper, has been working with EICS this year, supporting the continued growth in staff and administrator knowledge of Indigenous perspectives.
