Panther Pause
22 years of Pride at Colleyville Heritage High School
10.5.18
Panthers,
It is another short week in the books, and I think everyone is ready for a LONG weekend. I know we are excited to have a day of professional development to help us prepare for the rest of the semester. Our staff is working diligently to create learning experiences that will challenge and engage our students. We are nearly at the end of the grading period, and this is always a stressful time for everyone. I would encourage you to have open lines of communication with teachers to better assist your students and their needs.
It is an exciting time in our extra curricular at CHHS. Our fall show opened last night, 25 Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and will be showing over the next two weeks. I am looking forward to seeing the performance from our always fantastic theater department. Our marching band is beginning their marching season with a contest this weekend. Last night, we were able to enjoy the traditional Friday night experience on a Thursday. It was great to see our football team victorious, as well as see the performances by the band, drill team, and cheerleaders. They always fill me with PRIDE everytime I see them! Tonight is a big volleyball matchup as we host Birdville with the varsity match beginning at 5:30pm. I would encourage you to come out and support our girls, and then head over to the CHHS Auditorium to catch the play beginning at 7:00pm. As you can see, there is a lot going on and we look forward to so many great things from our students. Have a great LONG weekend and GO PANTHERS!

Student Voice
Define what PRIDE means to you at CHHS.
PRIDE, to me, not only means taking pride in my school, but also taking pride in who I am as a student and how my impact effects the school. As a student at CHHS, I am taught to work hard, have school spirit, and strive for success everyday. I'm blessed to have so many amazing and impactful teachers who not only teach me academics, but teach me important life lessons that shape my character. PRIDE means spreading school spirit and making the classroom a fun environment to learn in so that every student can have the most enjoyable high school experience. I believe every student at CHHS has an important role in the success of the school and everyone's experience in it.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT 2019: JASON TREESE
Jason Treese is our featured 2019 Senior Spotlight Student this week! Jason is a Captain and the starting center on the Varsity Football Team. He is a member of NHS and on the Football Leadership Team. Outside of school, Jason is on the Youth Leadership Team at his church and a member of the Youth Praise Band. In his free time, Jason enjoys reading, fishing and hanging out with his friends. Jason plans to attend college and major in Business Management or Aerospace Engineering. His favorite quote is "Success isn’t owned, its leased. And rent is due everyday.” - JJ Watt. Jason will be attending Project Graduation because he thinks it will be a great way to spend one last time with the class of 2019 as a whole. We hope all our seniors will join Jason at the 2019 Project Graduation Celebration.
letter from Dr. Groppel
Over the last several weeks, we have noticed an increased amount of electronic cigarettes and other vaping materials on campus. There is one product that we wanted to make you aware of in particular - Juul.
A Juul pod is disguised as a USB or jump drive that you plug into your computer and it releases a vaping product that is 5% nicotine by volume. That is more than double the amount of nicotine that appears in a Blu e-cig cartridge.
The patented formula combines nicotine with salt, resulting in a stronger liquid that vaporizes more smoothly and is easier to inhale a stronger amount of nicotine for longer periods of time. Some experts believe that the nicotine in one Juul pod is approximately equivalent to a whole package of cigarettes.
We are providing you with this information not to alarm you, but to provide you with some facts to contribute to an informative conversation with your student. According to the GCISD Student Code of Conduct, “a student shall not possess tobacco products, cigarettes; e-cigarettes; and any component, part, or accessory for an e-cigarette device. Students that are found in violation of this policy will be disciplined as outlined in the GCISD Student Code of Conduct.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any campus counselor or a member of the campus administration.

Grief Support program
The CHHS Counseling department will be hosting a Grief Support program beginning the week of October 9th and will run for 8 weeks. This program will be specifically for those students who have lost a close family member, such as a parent, sibling, or grandparent. Sadly, we have had several students experience this difficult loss over the last few years. It is our hope that these students who are working through their grief will find that there are others here in our CHHS community working through their own pain.
While each student will have the shared experience of having lost a loved one, the group will focus on team building, support, and healing. Some students participating may feel comfortable talking about feelings and emotions, while others would prefer to sit and listen as others share. Participation in this group is entirely voluntary. This group will be facilitated by Teen Lifeline, a local non-profit agency, and a GCISD counselor and will meet on Tuesdays from 4:10 to 5:00 PM in the CHHS Counseling office.
If you have any questions about the group, or have any other concerns, please feel free to contact me at (817) 305-4783 or via email at robin.davis@gcisd.net.

WANTED: EXPERT ADVISORS TO ASSIST SENIOR AP RESEARCH STUDENTS
In AP Research, students conduct a yearlong academic investigation, culminating in a 5,000-word academic paper and a 15-20 minute formal presentation. For the academic paper, students will design and conduct their own academic study.
The course requires students to locate advisors to assist them during their study. Students may work with multiple advisors. The CHHS seniors are searching for persons who can help guide their studies.
Some of the topics of research are:
“How are the diets of teenagers in the DFW area related to Instagram use?” The advisor needed would be someone with expertise in social media and an advisor with expertise in diets and nutrition.
"Does the practice of advertising prescription drugs directly to consumers through television contribute to consumer misinformation and misuse?" The advisor needed would be someone with experience in the practice of advertising prescription drugs.
"How does the socioeconomic status of a student affect his or her perception of different forms of affirmative action in regards to admissions at top ranked Texas schools?" The advisor needed would be someone who is knowledgeable in college admissions.
If you or someone you know would have interest aiding these students, please email their course instructor Ed Wevodau at ed.wevodau@gcisd.net for a complete list of advisors needed.
