Malabar Virtual STEAM Open House-Reminders
This Thursday, May 19, we have scheduled our Virtual STEAM Open House. This is our opportunity to show parents what their children have learned throughout the school year here at Malabar. Please focus on STEAM learning. Here are some reminders:
Teachers are presenting a Slides deck "live" through Zoom twice. Once at 5:00 and again at 5:30. Please post your zoom link on Schoology and send to Ms. Gutierrez in case parents are having difficulty logging in.
Teachers should welcome families in the beginning and close at the end of the presentation. Presentations should be limited to 25 minutes to allow families time to join another session.
Record one of your live presentations to share with parents unable to attend. (Personally, I would record both sessions and pick the best one to share on Schoology. Ms. Muro will share a "how-to video" later that shows how to record a Zoom meeting and share a link.)
Print out your Usage Report for evidence of participation. You might want to ask parents to rename their tile. Otherwise, your list might read: "iPhone 7" or "Samsung 56" or "Flaca's device."
Lead Team and Student Council will be recording a message to share in your Slides deck. I will forward these to you as soon as possible.
We suggest that you do not tell families that you will post your presentation on Schoology until after your second session to avoid low attendance.
To protect the privacy of students, please do not share the entire Slides deck with families. If a parent/guardian asks, you can share the slide their child participated in.
Please reach out to any member of the Lead Team for assistance. This is the time for Malabar to shine!
Reminder from our Intervention Coordinator-Lisa Martinez
SUB RELEASE DAYS TO SUPPORT DIBELS TESTING
We continue to support teachers with half day subs so that they can begin to test students in DIBELS. We realize it may be too soon for some teachers for DIBEL EOY, but the option is there for you. Teachers can start with those students that are at Benchmark or Above. The time can also be used to work on CUMS. Also, please note that the sub can be pulled on any given day if a class is unfilled. (So sorry ☹) I will also be available to help support teachers with testing in June. Thank you for your continued support in the education of our Malabar students.
Updates from our Intervention Teacher-Vanessa Chavez
Hello Teachers,
Hope everyone had a great weekend! Due to SBAC starting this week, there will be some changes to our Literacy Academy support.
Grade K-2- Schedule will remain the same. The only change is that TA's will no longer be providing support during Literacy Academy.
Grades 3-6th- We will communicate with you through email/ in-person regarding Mondays and Fridays.
Thank you!
Notes from our STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
As we approach the end of the third and final grading period, consider the assessment options we have in our Amplify Science curriculum. We have On-the-Fly assessments, End of chapter assessments, Student self-assessments, and Critical Juncture assessments that are all formative. We also have End of Unit Assessments (K-5) and Benchmark Assessments (3-5) that are summative. It is not necessary to administer all these assessments, but the formative assessments should be used to drive instruction and address preconceptions as well as misconceptions. Summative assessments should be used to determine if students met performance expectations in NGSS. If you have questions or need help with Amp Sci assessments, come by Room 5 or shoot me an email.
Updates from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar Family, testing season continues as we carry on with our ELPAC testing for English Learners. 3-6 grade, please do your best to have your English Learners done with ELPAC before we start the SBA testing on May 17th.
SBAC testing:
As mentioned, our SBA testing starts on May 17th. We will start off with a testing pep rally on Monday May 16.
Finally, we will be providing proctors for all teachers to support you in administering the test. Each teacher in grades 3 to 6 will get either a lead team member or Teacher Assistant to help you proctor on each day of testing. We will have a schedule for you soon.
Updates from Our PSW-Amanda Oyague
Hello teachers, thank you for utilizing my referral form for students who are of concern. Please continue utilizing the form and calling me at x310 for student support, Monday- Wednesday. Have a great weekend, drink water, unclench your jaw and rest! 🙂
Preparing for State Testing-SBA (Grades 3-6)
Let's focus on the following:
- ELA-focus on writing. Please make sure that students are writing independently everyday for a variety of purposes. Students will need to respond to all text types. Student should not be copying from the board or from the teacher.
- ELA-Continue to stress the need to cite from two different sources. Model and have them practice using sentence stems.
- Math-have students solve one to two sample items on a daily basis. Model your thinking as you solve problems together and then give students opportunities to solve independently.
- Please make sure that everyone has a working chromebook this week. Keep Chromebooks in the cart so they are ready for testing. If you need any extra chromebooks, please see Ms. Tiffer.
- Planning for a positive testing environment-we need to plan to post inspirational quotes in the classroom. I will print some growth mindset examples for you to post in the classroom. Remember that we need to cover any resources students might use.

Phase 3 of our Antiracist Journey in LA Unified: Confronting Implicit Bias and Microaggressions
We will engage in the following PD-Confronting Implicit Bias and Microaggressions on Tuesday, May 31. We will view the video portion during the meeting and then complete the assessment and evaluation on MyPLN. Please bring your laptop or IPAD to the meeting.
The objectives of this session are:
Learn about implicit bias and microaggressions
Understand the impact implicit bias and microaggressions have on students and adults in our schools and offices
Identify strategies for anticipating, acknowledging, and interrupting discrimination and bias
To Complete the Training: All employees are required to view the video in its entirety, either in a whole group setting or if that is not feasible, individually. Then, go to Section 2 to complete the assessment and evaluation. After viewing the recorded presentation by Dr. Tyrone Howard, each participant must log into MyPLN, and complete the assessment and evaluation.
Click “View Details” for Section 2 and “Launch Test” to start the assessment. All the answers must be correct in order to receive a passing score.
Once you complete the assessment, click “Evaluate” to start the evaluation and submit your responses.
