Principal's Message
Good afternoon Barbieri Family,
We have beautiful fall weather this weekend so I hope you are enjoying the outdoors! I have spent most of the weekend outdoors in Western, MA and have plans to do the same tomorrow with my family and my brother in law and his girlfriend who are visiting from North Carolina. It is definitely a leaf peeper's weekend! It's been a fun family weekend with all fall activities!
Thank you all for joining us for our K-2 and 3-5 Open House: Curriculum Nights! It felt great to have families back in the school building for family events. It had been some time since the pandemic that we had a well attended event! THANK YOU so much for your support at home!
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!
Maria
Hasta Luego Sra. Alvarez!
Sadly I am informing our families that Liannys Alvarez, former Office Assistant Manager and current School Adjustment Counselor will be leaving Barbieri School on Friday. Liannys has worked at Barbieri School for over 9.5 years, it would have been almost a decade in January of 2023. Liannys will be greatly missed by all of us! We look forward to having her join our team again sometime in the future. This is not a goodbye, but more like a see you later! Liannys is taking a leave due to temporarily relocating with her family.
Te vamos a extrañar muchísimo Liannys!
New School Adjustment Counselor
My name is Mandi Segel and I am the new Adjustment Counselor here at Barbieri. I am a LMHC and have worked in the field for over 6 years. I have worked in both education and healthcare.
I currently live in Ashland with my husband, Dan and my 9 month old daughter, Michaella. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family. I am looking forward to working with you all.
Message from Mr. Szwaja, Physical Education Teacher
Hello Barbieri Families,
I wanted to let you all know, I will sadly be leaving my position here at Barbieri, and my last day is Friday October 14th.
After a lot of consideration I made the tough decision for personal reasons to take a different position at a school 5 miles from my home. While I’m excited about the new opportunity I have, there’s a big part of me that’s sad to be saying goodbye to such amazing co-workers and families at Barbieri. I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed our time working together, and how much I value the friendship and family you’ve shown me over the past 3 years here.
It’s been great working together and I’ll definitely keep in touch!
All the best,
Mr. Joe Szwaja

Abbie Goldberg will provide an overview of what we know about adopted children’s educational experiences and mental health, with attention to the variability that exists among adopted children. She will discuss too how adoption “shows up” at school in children across the life cycle, from preschool to elementary/middle school to high school. Dr. Goldberg will discuss the unique challenges that parents face in determining whether and how much to share about their children’s adoption with schools, with attention to how parents can prepare their children to advocate for themselves, and also when intervening may be especially important. This talk will address institutional and interpersonal forms of marginalization within schools, including how these may be amplified for LGBTQ-parent families, and how such marginalization affects parents and children. Dr. Goldberg will also address best practices for schools and what teachers and other support professionals can do to enhance inclusion for all families in the school setting. Resources will also be shared, and there will be time for discussion and questions.
