Reminder for families that pick-up at or near the Renaissance Center

Wow, we asked and you all sure did deliver! Thank you so much! We have not been notified of any issues this week at the Renaissance Center. Thank you for partnering with us on this matter. #ItTakesaVillage

Please remember that this is a center for the Seniors in our community. We ask that you are mindful about parking in their lot and/or blocking entrances/exits in and out of their parking areas. They have vans that transport the Seniors, Seniors that drive, as well as staff.

Also, if your child waits for you in this area, they need to know they are not to enter the building - please try to be prompt in picking them up. They also do not need to sit on the steps leading into the entranceway. This can create tripping hazards for the Seniors trying to enter/exit the building. Thank you for your support in this matter. We will be reminding students that are in this area after school about the expectations.

PTO breakfast for teachers/staff

See Mr. Olson in room 326 for a permission form. Students need to be picked up at 5pm.

Be Kind To Your Mind Club (Drug Abstinence Club )

JSMS has a new club called Be Kind to Your Mind (Drug Abstinence Club). This club's mission is to provide a safe space to learn about the risks of addiction and commit to not using drugs or alcohol while gaining tools and skills to fight peer pressure and temptation. The purpose is to ensure all students have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and strength needed to stay away from drugs and work toward a bright future.

Meeting times will be on Mondays from 3-4 PM in room 103. Your child can pick up a permission form for this at any time in the office. If you have questions about the club, contact Sadie Frady (sfrady@k12k.com).

Ice Cream on Friday

Fridays couldn't be sweeter thanks to the FRI-YAY snack cart. PTO will be set up during activity period (when students walk the track) selling a snack on Fridays during the school year. For the entire month of September, on Friday, your student can buy a pre-packaged ice cream treat for $2.00. Our snacks will change monthly depending on the feedback we get from the students. The snack cart is cash only!

Also, if you would like to help volunteer during these times, please use the sign up link below.

Morning drop-off / Afternoon pick-up

We're happy to report that our slight tweak in drop-off/pick-up has been successful. Students are unloading (AM) and loading (PM) at a faster rate, and most of all, it is safer. Thank you for being a key part of this!

Reminder: please be mindful of our neighbors on Wateree, Oak, and Yadkin Streets during morning drop off and afternoon pickup. We want to ensure that our carlines do not block our neighbor's driveways.

Reminder as temperatures change...

We are nearing the time of year where it may be cooler in the morning but hot when your child goes outside to walk the track and/or participate in PE/Wellness class. Please talk to them about dressing in layers rather than resorting to the clothes closet for these needs. We try to utilize the clothes closet for a true need (dress code, spills, clothing need, etc).

Also, the air conditioner will remain on for a while, so the classrooms may seem cool for some. Remind your child to bring a light jacket/hoodie to keep in their backpack, as needed. Again, we try to utilize our jacket/hoodie supply for true needs.

7th Grade Trips

7th grade will be taking trips in December and May. Students received a form outlining the behavior requirements for these trips. Students are required to return these forms, signed by a parent or guardian, to their homeroom teacher. All forms were due by August 31. If you missed this deadline and still wish to have your child participate, please reach out to one of their 7th grade teachers to see if it's possible.

8th grade Washington DC trip

Information and paperwork has been shared with all 8th grade students. If they did not receive this paperwork they can ask their History teacher for their copy. The First Payment was due on Thursday, September 7. If you missed this opportunity, please return the payment/paperwork ASAP to the front office. The first payment is $250 and needs to be turned in with all paperwork filled out.

Water bottle filling stations

We are blessed to have several water bottle filling stations located throughout the school. It is encouraged for students to bring a water bottle with them to stay hydrated. Also, this helps students from missing class time if they have water with them rather than making trips to the water fountain.

Family Life

Wellness/PE has started Family Life through KCS (Mrs. Baker). Your child will be participating at some point during this school year. If the parent wishes for the student to opt out of this program, the student must bring a signed parent note with them to school.

Prayer Warriors

Prayer Warriors will meet on the below scheduled Wednesday's at 7:15AM in the library. Participants must have a completed permission form prior to attending. They can pick a permission form up from the office.

On the alternate Wednesday's, Wyldlife will be held in the library. Please join us for that as well.

General Information

  • Please keep your contact information updated. This can be done through your Aspen Parent Portal or by contacting LeAnn Franklin 378-2435 in the counseling office. It's vitally important that we have current contact phone numbers and a correct address for each student. If your email changes be sure to let us know that as well.

  • You MUST present an ID when visiting Sevier or checking out your student.

  • Please try to have after school arrangements communicated with your child prior to them arriving to school.

  • Students attending sporting events need to remain with their guardian. Students that are dropped off without an adult with them will not be allowed to enter the sporting event.

ALL IN FOR LESS THAN 10

~ Join us as KCS kicks off an attendance Initiative ~

We know, you know, we all know how vitally important being at school is! We want to partner with you on this and knock down any barriers that are keeping them from attending school regularly. We look forward to working together to see that your child gets to school everyday.

KCS Middle School Cell Phone Policy

Students’ cell phones and other electronic devices are to be turned off and not visible upon a student’s arrival to school (upon entering the building) until the end of the student’s school day. Students must store their cell phones and other electronic devices in their backpacks (exceptions may be granted for medical or other extraordinary circumstances as determined by the building principal or designee). Cell phones may be confiscated if this rule is violated. When confiscated from students, parents will be asked to retrieve the cell phone from the school administration.

  • 1st offense - The item will be confiscated and kept at the school for a minimum of five (5) consecutive school days. To retrieve the confiscated item, a parent or guardian must contact the appropriate administrator.

  • 2nd offense - When a student has a second offense during the current semester, the item will be confiscated for a minimum of ten (10) school days. A parent or guardian must retrieve the confiscated item from the front office.

  • 3rd offense - When a student has a third offense during the current semester, the item may be confiscated for the remainder of the school year. A parent or guardian may retrieve the confiscated item at the end of the school day on the last day of the school year.

Hello from our PTO

Hello Warrior Families!

Please see the information at the top of this newsletter regarding a staff breakfast that we are providing on September 28th. We appreciate your assistance in making this a success!

JSMS PTA transitioned to a PTO at the end of last school year. What does that even mean? It means that membership is FREE now! It also means that we get to keep 100% of all our donations and are not required to send any funds to the national organization. We are working hard to finalize all the transition details. Be on the lookout in the next Weekly Warrior for more membership information.

Need some swag? We have created an online shop where you can order at your convenience. We outsourced a local vendor for our spirit shop this year and we couldn't be happier. Go check it out! It's more than just tees. We have our very own Stanley Dupe! Visit the link below to order!

Sevier Swag (commonsku.com)

We do have a few spots to fill in our slate of officers. We are looking for a President (or President co-chair) position. If you are interested in helping serve on this board, please reach out to Jessica Slaughter at jessns1015@gmail.com. We look forward to working with you!
