The Articles of Confederation

The Start of Our Nation

Why It Worked

  • It included a unified army for the states.

  • It set up a legislature where each state had one vote.

  • It was able to build and control an army.

  • It had the ability to deal with foreign countries on behalf of the states.

Why It Didn't

  • It didn't let the national government enforce laws.
  • It didn't let the national government tax.
  • It required 9 out of 13 state's approval to pass a law, and all 13 in order to amend a law.
  • It didn't set up a executive or judicial branch.
  • It caused the states to suffer economically, especially when each state started tax one another and hurting trade.
