Weekly Update October 18th-22nd

Change in Operational Status

Midnight Sun Family Learning Center is under Medium Risk for virus mitigation. This changes how we operate only slightly: masks are required for grades 3-8, non-essential meetings are held via Zoom, and we are vigilant with keeping our building clean. Really, the only change is mask requirements for all staff and students grades 3-8th. Video and teleconferencing will be an option through-out this year and will remain a common for years to come. This method of meeting allows for greater flexibility for families traveling, working, and experiencing other issues where meeting in-person is not an option. Of course, meeting in-person is best, but when that becomes impossible, video or tele-conferencing is a great option rather than having no option at all.

Late Student Arrival: if you are later than 9:10 for arrival, please drop your student at the front office. This allows for less distraction of morning work for your classroom teacher.

Scholastic Book Fair:

Our book fair ended on Friday, October 15th. Orders sheets will be sent home on Tuesday; these are paid directly to the school. For parents that have paid, great! You are one step ahead. I will send those order forms as "paid" home with your student. At this time we can only accept cash or check. Our credit card accounting system is being established and is not ready as of now. Thank you for all of your purchases!

Before and afterschool tutoring services begin on October 20th with morning sessions starting at 7:45 a.m. and afternoon sessions starting at 3:45. If you've contacted me, you are on the list of parents to receive permission slips. Please return these slips by Wednesday morning October 20th. We are not accepting any more students at this time. I will reach out to parents once the first week is over to see additional student needs and where we can place them for sessions. I am planning "Homework Help" sessions for 2nd Semester. Tutoring time is focused on Math, Reading, and Writing using IReady data and teacher /student/parent input for needs. The first week will involve discovering what the student needs are and creating a plan for each student.

Parent Permission Slip for registered students only (in case your student forgets their sheet):

Great Alaska Shake-Out:

Midnight Sun Family Learning Center is participating in the Great Alaska Shake-Out on Thursday, October 21st at 10:21 am. This is part of our safety drill series for the year. See the link below for information on how you can prepare your family for Earthquakes.

Basketball: Grades 4-5th girls and boys.

Boys practice: M,W 3:45-4:45

Girls practice: T, R 3:45-4:45

APC Meeting: The Academic Policy Committee will meet on Thursday, October 21st at 6pm via Zoom. I will send out a link to parents on our Facebook, Twitter, and Blackboard pages.

Brrrr...snowy, wet weather:

If your student does not have snow boots, they will need to stay on the pavement during recess. This is to ensure that they stay warm and dry. Please have your student bring snow gear to school; if you need help with gear, drop me an email. We do have some gear in the building for students when they forget their winter gear but not all sizes are available.

National Student Council Elections:

Elections are held on Wednesday, October 20th for grades 6-8th. This is officer and representatives only elections. Our focus this year is building a Constitution and Bylaws for MNC Student Council to be used for present and future councils. Second semester we will be joined by K-2 representatives and 3-5 representatives for activities for the second half of the year.
