Big picture

OECHS Summer Office Hours (Beginning Next Week)

Beginning next week, the OECHS office (Ragsdale Building, Room 102A) will be operating on a four-day week and will be open Monday-Thursday from 8:00-5:00, except for Memorial Day and Independence Day.

Class of 2022

Seniors that have not picked up their pre-ordered yearbook or high school diploma can stop by the OECHS office. High school transcripts will be finalized in the next week and will be sent out to colleges and universities via CFNC (in-state schools) and Parchment (out of state schools). Copies of OECHS transcripts can be requested via Parchment on the OECHS website.

A couple of links for high school graduation photos were emailed out to your OCS email addresses and sent through Remind. You are free to download and print those!

CCCC diplomas are ready to be picked up in the CCCC Registrar's office (Student Center). CCCC transcripts have been ordered, but will take about a week to process. They can also be picked up in the Student Center (or mailed to your college/university).

CCCC has also emailed out a link to your Coastal email account where you can view and purchase graduation photos.

Have a great summer and congratulations!

Class of 2023

-Make this summer count! This is your last best chance to improve your college resume. Volunteer, get active, and highlight your leadership! The goal is for college acceptance and scholarships! Keep your eyes on the prize!

-If you have not done so already, turn in your textbooks and calculators. When students turn in their materials, it saves them from accruing fines and allows the school to re-issue them to other students!

-Grades will be finalized (9th-11th grade) in PowerSchool once all state exam grades come in. Hopefully, it will happen this week!

-Since 2020, all North Carolina 12th graders have been required to have the Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (two doses). Please see the attached flyer and get the vaccine prior to the start of the school year!

-Rising Seniors are also reminded to volunteer with SAT (Sponsors for Academic Talent, Inc.) approved agencies this summer! SAT, Inc. is a local community initiative that will result in either $500 or $1000 scholarships! Students need a 3.5 weighted GPA, 1100 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT, and either 75 or 100 hours of community service. Information about SAT Inc. can be found https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/Page/1336

-Rising Seniors should have asked for recommendations for college applications, emailed resumes to their recommenders, and sent thank you cards to their recommenders. If not, they need to complete those three steps before they finish the summer break.

-We have had some attendance issues this year, primarily in online classes. Most courses will be face to face next year and we will use a new check in system for daily attendance for Juniors and Seniors in 2022-2023. Students will have a daily sign-in sheet by the main office in the Ragsdale Building. We want students to be successful and to make the most of this opportunity!

-Prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year, we will have a back-to-school session with our rising Seniors and their parents on August 4th at 5:30 in the Bodenhamer Auditorium (Fine Arts Building) at CCCC.

Senior Portraits

OECHS is partnering with a new photographer this school year. We will have our Senior Portraits (tuxes/drapes) sometime after the new school year begins, in August or September. As soon as dates are finalized, we will send out information!

Class of 2024

-It is never too early to start preparing for the ACT. There are many free resources that you can utilize now. Working a little bit every week is much more productive than cramming for the test! Some resources include:

-Grades will be finalized (9th-11th grade) in PowerSchool once all state exam grades come in. Hopefully, it will happen this week!

-Rising Juniors are reminded to volunteer with SAT (Sponsors for Academic Talent, Inc.) approved agencies this summer! SAT, Inc. is a local community initiative that will result in either $500 or $1000 scholarships! Students need a 3.5 weighted GPA, 1100 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT, and either 75 or 100 hours of community service. Information about SAT Inc. can be found https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/Page/1336

-Next year, you will have a mandatory weekly seminar where we will spend over half of the year preparing for the ACT and PSAT. Both are important exams that are used for college admissions and scholarships. We will also spend time researching different colleges and universities, as well as beginning the college application process. Students will also be encouraged to be active in OECHS Clubs/Teams, CCCC organizations, and outside activities for a well-rounded college admission application. We will also have a daily sign-in sheet for all Juniors and Seniors next year to make sure students are on track (and to take daily attendance).

-Prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year, we will have a back-to-school session with our rising Juniors and their parents on August 2nd at 5:30 in the Bodenhamer Auditorium (Fine Arts Building) at CCCC.

Class of 2025

--Grades will be finalized (9th-11th grade) in PowerSchool once all state exam grades come in. Hopefully, it will happen this week!

--Rising sophomores are reminded to volunteer with SAT (Sponsors for Academic Talent, Inc.) approved agencies, beginning this summer! SAT, Inc. is a local community initiative that will result in either $500 or $1000 scholarships! Students need a 3.5 weighted GPA, 1100 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT, and either 75 or 100 hours of community service. Information about SAT Inc. can be found https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/Page/1336.

--Our rising Sophomores are encouraged to step up and be leaders next year! OECHS and the early college experience is what you make of it! Future universities and employers are looking for leaders and this is a great way to stand out on college applications. Hone your skills now!

Class of 2026

-If this is your first time reading our newsletter, The Owl, welcome to OECHS! We send out a new Owl periodically over the summer to get out important information. During the school year, a new Owl will be sent every weekend.

-We sent out an email to all new Owls with details on their first assignment in Teams. It is a Flipgrid assignment that gives the students a chance to get to know a little about their new classmates. 42 students have already recorded their Flipgrid! Great job!

-The English I Honors summer reading assignment was also posted on Teams. A copy of the assignment is posted below.

-We also use Remind and SchoolMessenger (connected to PowerSchool) to send out announcements. Please sign up for the Class of 2026 Remind group at the following site: https://www.remind.com/join/fkf7d67.

-The OECHS Class of 2026 has been created in Teams! We still have a few more students to pull in from homeschools/private schools and then we will be complete! If you are coming to OECHS from an OCS middle school and you do not see the OECHS Class of 2026 in your Teams, please email james.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us.
