From The Principal
It is hard to believe it is already time for winter break! We are excited for our winter parties on Friday starting at 11:15. We have organized the lost and found (see picture below) and encourage you to come take a look while you are here on Friday for the parties. After Friday all items will be donated to the Salvation Army. A huge shout out to Courtney Freet for organizing the lost and found, it looks so much better!
We are so excited for our all school PJ day on Friday! We are encouraging a dollar donation to our PTO. The class with the highest participation rate will win a treat!
Just a reminder that there is no Boys and Girls Club this Friday, so please make alternative arrangements if needed. Also, students return to school Wednesday, January 8th. Have a warm and restful break and we will see you in 2020!
As always it is an honor to serve as the principal of Sunflower Elementary!

5th grade choir, under the direction of Pete Gipson performed at Crown Center in Kansas City last Tuesday. The children did a wonderful job of representing our school. We would also like to congratulate Mr. Gipson, 1st grade and choir on their successful program last night. 4th and 5th grade choir will be caroling tomorrow, December 19th at Hy-Vee.
From The Librarian
Greetings from the Library! My name is Amy Bones and I am your new librarian! I apologize that it’s taken me so long to introduce myself. But better late than never, right?
What do we learn in library?
In library, we learn about many different topics. In the upper grades, we focus on conducting research, choosing a research topic, citing sources, and copyright and plagiarism. In the lower grades, we focus more on story elements (character, plot, setting, etc.), comparing and contrasting, author’s purpose, and how to use the library.
All grade levels go over digital citizenship and learn about being safe online, what information is okay and not okay to share online, how to identify appropriate websites, and what to do if you or someone you know is being cyberbullied. We have also learned a bit about coding and different ways that technology can help us in our everyday lives.
I have had so much fun getting to know the students at Sunflower and have taken this knowledge and applied it towards collection development (weeding and purchasing materials for the library). My overall goal for the collection is to purchase materials that will support student learning and be interesting enough to keep them coming back for more.
