Aiming to Keep You Informed

March 22, 2019

From the Office

This morning, students had another Innovation Project workday session; they continue to be engaged and passionate about their topics. Please ask your student what their topic is if you haven't and what work they have done so far! Their presentations will be the evening of May 16th!

We have another parent opportunity on May 16th in addition to Innovation Night, so please mark your calendars. We have partnered with the LTM Foundation to provide a drug awareness presentation for parents on the evening of May 16th. Members of the LTM Foundation will be available to speak to parents and provide them with resources and examples of what to look for and be aware of in relation to teen drug use. In addition to the parent presentation, LTM will visit Westfield in April to speak to our students.

We also were able to recognize our Honor Roll students on Thursday morning with the support of our PTO and Student Recognition Committee! Congratulations to all of our 2nd Trimester Honor Roll students! See the link below for the Honor Roll list.

Upcoming Student Testing

After Spring Break, students will complete the new Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing. IAR is state mandated and replaces the PARCC test. Please read this IAR Parent Letter or visit https://www.isbe.net/iar for more information regarding the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. At Westfield, students will complete testing the week of April 8 - 12th, with make-up testing the following week.

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness will be used to measure the growth of each student as compared to students around the state. We believe that our students should approach this type of testing with confidence and view it as an opportunity to demonstrate how much they have grown this year and how prepared they are to move to the next level.

A Message to Parents from Your Student's PE/Health Teacher

Dear Parents/Guardians-

Your child/children will be involved in an outside of school project for their PE class. The project is called “Healthy Food TV Show” where they will make a video that shows how to prepare and make a healthy food dish (ex: fruit smoothie, chicken kabobs, cauliflower pizza, etc). They can do this project individually or with a group of up to 5 students. We told the students that it is highly recommended to have adult supervision when they are preparing/making their food for their safety and the safety of the home. Please have a conversation with your child/children: when they plan on doing this, what they are making and who will be supervising (if needed). This project is due on Friday, April 12th, so they have plenty of time to prepare for this. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s PE teacher.
