A Mom Reflects -- Difference Between Camp Tech Terra and School
By Sharon Stroh-Cock
School starts this week for students in my area. My youngest will be starting Kindergarten, please cue the oohs and aahs. I know he will be learning all sorts of wonderful things. As well as new information, he will learn better how to learn in an organized manner -- how to sit still and listen, accept group instruction, take notes, raise his hand and do what others are doing around him.
Yes, our children need the skills taught in school, but there is much, much more. They need opportunities to "play" with new concepts, to explore in a tactile manner without a test at the end to measure exactly what they learned, to practice the skills they want to practice, not the ones they are required to practice. And they need to be in a safe environment with guidance available to do that.
One of the lessons at Camp TechTerra this summer involved physics. A group of middle school boys were doing the activity, which involved playing with slingshots. Three different types of slingshots were available. After playing for a bit, they decided to compare which ones worked "best." The students decided that for them "best" meant how far and accurate the slingshots could shoot.
After working with the ones provided, they began to create their own slingshots -- with no sticks or straight edges in sight. Then, having worked on different ideas independently, they realized they each had created a piece of something that would work well together. They made a great slingshot out of rubber bands and shower curtain rings!!
Camp TechTerra offers programs for students ages 5 to 14 that help them explore the natural world in makerspace communities through coding, digital storytelling, robotics, making and digital devices. Sharing, connecting and collaborating are integral to these authentic meaning-finding experiences. Students are taught the process of computational thinking within an environment that honors safety, choice, exploration and fun.
The TechTerra curriculum, inspired by Maker Education and Project Based Learning, was developed by Susan Wells, a national leader in mobile-integrated STEM education and veteran public school educator.
