Mining Company Repossesses Aboriginal Land
Aboriginal elder Jagamarra, from Wyndham a remote town in far North East Australia, is being forced from his place of residence by mining company Mainstay. Representatives from Mainstay declined to comment, however work appears to have commenced on the site, with a burn off commencing early this morning.
The community are outraged at the companies decision to remove Jagamarra and his grandson from their home and will be petitioning Wyndham City Council to appeal the decision. It is unclear where Jagamarra and his grandson will relocate, or if any compensation has been offered to the family.
Indigenous housing and infrastructure has been touted a priority of the Australian and Northern Territory Governments. More than $1.7 billion is being invested over 10 years to improve Indigenous housing in the Territory.
