March/April news for parents, teachers and students
Spring Reading Incentives!
We are continuing our Bingo reading incentive which started at the beginning of the year. We will have a celebration for all children who complete the entire bingo sheet. All sheets must be completed by Friday, May 1, 2015 to participate in the party. Mrs. Stepp will be sending home a letter soon for those Scouts playing to inform parents what their children have completed so far. This is a way to encourage your student to try new genres.
Blowfish Reading Program begins in April
Blowfish Reading Program
This fun reading program combines books and baseball! Students are encouraged to read up to four books between April 13- May 8 to receive free admission and special recognition at a Blowfish home game. The school with the highest participation rate receives $500 for new library books and will be recognized on field before their designated game. The designated game for GPS will be on Thursday, June 25.
Base prizes include...
- FIRST BASE (1 book read) = one ticket to our school's designated home game
- SECOND BASE (2 books read) = one ticket for the parent/guardian to our school's designated home game
- THIRD BASE (3 books read) = the student earns a spot in the pre-game Parade
- HOME RUN (4 books read) = one free hot dog and one free Coca-Cola at our school's designated home game
Each student will receive a Blowfish Bookmark and Reading Log to track his/her reading progress. The reading log is for students to fill out as they read each book over the selected 4-week period. When the program ends, students will turn in their completed reading log to their homeroom teacher. Mrs. Stepp will then send home a letter to those parents/guardians with information on how to redeem tickets and prizes. Please note that Blowfish staff will not accept the bookmark as a "ticket" on the day of the game like they have done in the past. Tickets/prizes must be reserved in advance by calling or emailing the box office. Blowfish home games will be played at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium located at 474 Ball Park Road in Lexington.
Favorite Nominated Picture Books at GPS
SC Picture Book Award
Students voted in February for their favorite SC Book Award nominees. The favorite at GPS for the picture book category was The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce. The winner announced at the SC Association of School Librarians in Columbia in March was That is Not a Good Idea! by Mo Willems. This was one of our top choices as well. Watch the book trailer below to see this new favorite!
