Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Williams
February 1st-5th is National School Counseling week! School Counselors contribute in many ways to support our students, families, and staff. Below are some insights about the School Counseling profession and what we do:
- School Counselors have a Master’s degree or Educational Specialist Degree.
- We focus on 3 major areas: Personal/Social, Career, and Academics.
- We are trained in crisis counseling which includes issues such as grief, threat of suicide, and abuse.
- We often refer students/families to mental health and other community resources.
- We maintain student confidentiality unless the student is in danger: being hurt by someone, or going to hurt someone else.
- We provide short-term counseling, often solution-focused therapy.
- We maintain a non-judgmental approach.
- We are no longer called “Guidance Counselors”.
- We support students through individual, small group, and classroom counseling lessons both in person and virtually.
- We collaborate with teachers, administration, parents, community resources, and agencies.
- School Counselors follow ethical guidelines in all the work we do.
- School Counselors have national standards through the American School Counselor Association.
Why I love being a school counselor: I get to interact and connect with amazing little humans! Every day is a new opportunity to support and advocate for our students and their families.
Thank you, Winfield families for supporting the work I do!

Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Adams
Hello, Winfield families!
Over in PBIS land, we are all about the emotions. Emotion management plays a vital role in both a child's academic and personal life, and recognizing one's feelings helps to keep emotions in check. As adults, we understand that it is difficult to think straight and make good decisions when emotions are intense, but children need the skills and tools necessary to maintain a sense of calm. Strong feelings of anger can lead to aggressive behavior, and children may also struggle to make good choices when they experience other intense feelings. Recognizing and labeling feelings in oneself and others facilitates problem solving, self-management, and social-emotional competence. Focusing on bodily signs of strong emotions (hot face, racing heart, sweaty palms, sick stomach, wobbly legs) helps children recognize distressing emotions that might require managing.
Managing our emotions is hard, whether you are four or six or forty six! Teaching our children to effectively manage their feelings and emotions is such an important, ongoing task for both teachers and parents – there is no one-size-fits-all lesson for helping children to understand feelings, it takes many, regular touches as a child moves through the following stages of emotional development:
- Recognizing a range of emotions in themselves and others
- Recognizing the physical and emotional responses we have to each of these emotions
- Learning to express their own feelings verbally
- Learning to calm oneself down in the face of overwhelming emotions, and
- Learning to treat others with kindness and empathy
I am a huge fan of using books as a resource to open discussion with kids about all manner of situations and problems. Helping children learn to identify emotions, the situations that spark these feelings, and effective coping skills provides them with a strong emotional foundation, which in turn can lead to increased self confidence and sense of self esteem. The following book is a fantastic resource to open up a discussion with your child regarding the wide range of emotions we can experience daily. Utilizing resources like this one helps to guide our students to develop effective strategies for managing overwhelming, stressful feelings and emotions.
Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis - Jamie Lee Curtis's zany and touching verse, paired with Laura Cornell's whimsical and original illustrations, helps kids explore, identify, and, even have fun with their ever-changing moods. Silly, cranky, excited, or sad—everyone has moods that can change each day. And that’s okay! Follow the boisterous, bouncing protagonist as she explores her moods and how they change from day to day.
If possible, take a few minutes and check out the read aloud version of this book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JofkgL7CY5A

From the School Nurse, Mrs. Taylor
On Wednesday, February 3rd I will be doing hearing screening for our 2nd grade distance learners. Any student in Mrs. Lachowicz’s or Mrs. Bartochowski’s class may come to school between 10am and 2pm for hearing screening. The test only takes a few minutes. Hearing screening is state mandated.
I have received a few questions about students quarantining due to close contact exposure to COVID-19. If your child is excluded from school due to being a close contact to a COVID positive person (less than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) they should stay at home during the 14 day quarantine period. They should not participate in activities outside of the household or play or have contact with others not living in their home.
During a 14 day quarantine for close contact :
-Stay home for 14 days. Do not participate in activities outside the household or with people not living with you.
-Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, nasal congestion, headache, diarrhea. If symptoms appear COVID testing is recommended.
-Stay away from high risk family members living in your household.
If your child experiences COVID-related symptoms at home please keep them home. Any fever, cough/ respiratory symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor and a doctor’s note to return to school is needed before sending your child back to school. If anyone in your immediate household is ill and being tested for COVID-19 please do not send other siblings to school until test results are obtained.
Our Winfield parents have been doing a fabulous job helping us keep our students and staff safe by closely monitoring their children and following illness, isolation and quarantine guidelines! Thank you!

Your child is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
