East Elementary Parent Newsletter
February 2020 Edition
We Love Our East Family!
We recently completed our middle of the year DRA assessments to measure each individual student's growth in reading and the progress they've made. This information will be shared with you soon. Our students have worked very hard and we are so proud of them!
We are excited to share some upcoming events with you for our spring semester. One highlight is our spring parent night carnival will happen on March 5th. We look forward to enjoying some fun events with your families and sharing some wonderful academic activities that you can use with your child at home. We will also share important information about a Spring Reading Challenge that everyone is invited to participate in over the course of the next few months.
Thank you again for allowing us to be a part of your child's education. We hope to see you around campus this spring!

Reading with Your Child
In an article I have referenced below, it shares that with the research this organization has done over time, they have been blown away that kids time and again said the most special time they recall spending with a parent is reading together! So even when we don't know how to help with their math or how to solve the argument they had at school that day with a friend, we can read!
Reading has become such an important part of our routine at home. My children know this is individual time they can count on with me and it has become time that I treasure more and more as they grow older. I encourage you in this next season of life to find a few minutes every night to remember what it was like when your babies were little and were excited about books. Curl up beside them and just read! On March 5th, we will have parent night and each family will receive a new chapter book that you can read with your children at home. This will kick off a spring reading challenge for our families that we are excited about.

U.I.L. - District Meet on February 8th!
The U.I.L. Academic Program is designed to enrich student learning and provide students with a competitive opportunity. Our final teams have been selected and students will be practicing to prepare for the meet in Hallsville on Saturday, February 8th. We are excited for these students and know they will represent Hallsville well! Thank you to our wonderful coaches that are working closely with our students to help them be successful!
Attendance, Sickness, and Tardies... Oh My!
With that being said, please make sure they stay home when they are sick. Students should be completely fever free without fever reducing medicines and free of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning. We have seen a lot of illness recently and we want to do everything we can to keep our students and safe healthy.
Thank you for your help with this!
Scholastic Book Fair -- February 10th - 14th
Our book fair will be open the week of February 10th for our students and families to shop. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand your home libraries and to support our library fund for the purchase of additional books that our students can enjoy.
Each day, parents in different grade levels are invited to come have lunch with their child and shop at the book fair while you are here.Be sure and check out the dates and times on the note that was sent home in Thursday folders.
In addition, the book fair will be open during our muffins for moms event hosted by our PTA on February 14th.
