Message from the Principal
Hello Grizzlies,
Great job to all our students learning from home this week. Most students were successfully checking in with teachers during Office Hours, communicating with their teachers in other ways and successfully submitting their assignments to Canvas. We heard a lot from students that, in addition to turning in their asynchronous assignments from teachers, were also taking advantage of the time to get caught up on missing assignments. We know that this is not the ideal learning situation, but truly appreciate everyone's positive attitudes.
We can't wait to have our students come back on campus. Right now it looks like we are still on track to come back for in-person instruction on Jan. 31.
In the meantime, I encourage everyone to keep working hard and to stay engaged. We have finals week up next. See the schedule below. Students should make sure they log onto their teacher's Zoom link for the synchronous check in next week during each scheduled class. See the reminder about Finals Week expectations below.
Please everyone stay healthy! Remember to wear your mask when you're in public and even when you are with your friends.
See you soon!
Benjamin Bell
Finals Week Schedule 1/24 - 1/27
Reminder: Finals Week Expecations
Week 2 Jan. 24-27:
- We will follow the Finals Bell schedule (below)
- We are not having traditional finals
- Teachers will be offering alternative assignments or projects depending on the content area and class.
- Teacher Review and Study Sessions will be available via Zoom during the scheduled time
- Synchronous Zoom Check In - First 30 minutes of each class
- All students log in to the teacher's Zoom link and teachers will clarify instructions for their assignment/project/activity. Students can ask questions, attendance will be taken, then teachers release students to work on their own.
- Students complete assignment asynchronously
- If a student could not attend the Zoom check in, submission of the assignment or email communication can be used for attendance purposes.

College & Career Pathways: Resources for Students and Families
College Pathways 101 Information Session
Wednesday, February 16, 5:30 to 6:30 PM on Zoom
AHS counseling staff will present college information, specifically geared toward juniors/sophomores and their parents/guardians. Topics covered will include the process of applying to both community colleges and four-year universities, and how to access financial aid/scholarships. Info session zoom link: https://asdconnect-org.zoom.us/j/97711618881. This session will be recorded and available on the AHS YouTube Channel, where you can also find info sessions from earlier this school year.
ACT and SAT Updates
Students planning on applying to four year colleges that require test scores usually take the ACT and/or SAT tests in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year. The Oregon Public Universities no longer require test scores for admissions. Students can register for the ACT and SAT online and those who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible for fee waivers for both tests. Please contact karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us to obtain a fee waiver.
ASPIRE at AHS
ASPIRE’s trained volunteer mentors help students explore education and career pathways. Mentors assist students in researching colleges, preparing admissions and scholarship applications, understanding the financial aid process, and many other aspects of the road to post-secondary education and careers. Now is a great time for juniors to sign up to work with an ASPIRE mentor. Students who want to learn more about ASPIRE or sign up for a mentor can contact jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us.
Scholarship deadlines are approaching!
Seniors have been receiving support on completing the OSAC Scholarship and AHS Local Scholarship applications in their CCR classes, and are strongly encouraged to reach out to Jen Marsden, our AHS College & Career Specialist, for one-on-one help and questions. There are also a number of Scholarship Support Work Sessions scheduled for January to help students get their applications completed. Find the help session dates and times here. For more information on the scholarship application process, you can view the Scholarship Opportunities Information Session recording on the AHS YouTube Channel, and check out the information below.

Important FINANCIAL AID INFO for Senior Families!!!
Students have had the opportunity to complete their portion of the 2022-23 FAFSA in their CCR classes. There is also a parent section of the FAFSA, where the student’s parent(s) need to provide demographic and financial information. The 2022-2023 FAFSA went live October 1st and will use tax information from 2020. If not familiar with FAFSA, senior parents are strongly encouraged to watch this recording of the Financial Aid 101 info session to learn more about how to complete the application! If students or parents do not have social security numbers, please contact Jen Marsden so she can provide guidance on how to fill out the FAFSA without an SSN and information on ORSAA, an alternative financial aid form. Please reach out to jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us with questions or for help on any financial aid applications.
Upcoming College & Career Pathways Info Sessions: All sessions will be on zoom from 5:30 - 6:30 pm and can be accessed at the following link: https://asdconnect-org.zoom.us/j/97711618881. The sessions will be recorded and available on the AHS YouTube Channel, where you can already find info session recordings from last year.
Wednesday, November 3, Community College Opportunities and Pathways: Community colleges offer an extensive array of professional training programs in fields such as Mechanics, Electronics, Culinary Arts, Massage Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy, Graphic Design and more! Students can also complete general education credits at a community college, receive a two-year A.A or A.S degree and then transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Learn more about these potential college and career pathways and how to access them! There will also be an overview of the Oregon Promise grant and other financial aid and scholarships available to AHS students.
Wednesday, December 8, Scholarships and Financial Aid: AHS counseling staff will provide information on scholarship opportunities for AHS seniors, including tips on how to complete the online OSAC Scholarship E-app and the AHS Local Scholarships applications. Counselors will present scholarship information first, and then discuss and answer questions about financial aid, including FAFSA and CSS completion, for parent/guardians and students who would like to stay for more information on those applications. This meeting is important if students plan to attend a private/public university, community college or trade school, and are interested in finding funds to pay for school.
Recording of College Pathways 101 9/14/2021: Overwhelmed by the thought of planning for college? AHS counseling staff will present information on college pathways, specifically geared toward junior and senior students and their families. Topics covered will include a general overview of the process of applying to both community colleges and four-year universities, ACT/SAT testing, and how to access financial aid/scholarships.
Recording of Financial Aid 101 9/29/2021: Learn about the pathways to access financial aid and scholarships! We will discuss the process for completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), an online application which qualifies students to receive the Federal Pell Grant, the Oregon Opportunity Grant, the Oregon Promise, and government loans. Even if you think your family will not qualify for federal financial aid, it is important to complete the FAFSA. Many colleges will not give students merit aid unless they have a FAFSA on record. We will also briefly cover the CSS Profile, a separate online application many private schools use to determine institutional financial aid.
