West Shore Newsletter
February 2018
Note From the Principal
Dear West Shore Families,
Kindergarten Round-Up is scheduled for March 8th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the West Shore gymnasium. We hope to see all parents of students eligible for the 2018-2019 Kindergarten school year attend this year’s Round-Up. Students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1st, 2018 to be eligible for Kindergarten.
In addition to Kindergarten, West Shore offers a Young 5’s option. Students with birthdays after June 1st are considered for Young 5’s. Kindergarten screening scores along with parent input help determine if Young 5’s or Kindergarten is the best placement for your child.
What to expect during Kindergarten Round-Up: There will be a thirty-minute presentation filled with important readiness information. We will address any questions or concerns you may have as you prepare for this important milestone. Our Kindergarten and Young 5’s teachers will be on hand to meet and talk with you after the presentation. Representatives from Transportation, Preschool, SKIP, and After School programs will also be there to provide additional information.
Enrollment forms will be online for the 2018-2019 school year. You will have the opportunity to register online during Round-Up.
Required documents are listed below:
State Issued Birth Certificate
Immunization Record
Proofs of Residency (see our West Shore Elementary website for details regarding proof of residency)
Kindergarten Screening: Placement screening for all upcoming Kindergarteners will be held at West Shore Elementary during the week of May 7th. Please be sure to make an appointment for screening during Kindergarten Round Up!
Kindergarten Vision and Hearing Screening: Vision and hearing screening are required prior to the start of school. Limited free screening will be available at West Shore Elementary by appointment only. If your family physician does not offer vision and hearing screening, you may want to consider this opportunity.
Further enrollment information is available at www.lakefentonschools.org. Select the “Schools” tab and go to West Shore Elementary, then click on Kindergarten Round Up information.
We look forward to serving you as your child begins his/her educational journey. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at sshaughnessy@lakefentonschools.org or call the West Shore office at 810-591-6542.

Parent Pick-Up
Just a reminder, due to safety concerns during after school pick up times, West Shore has a "NO LOBBY" pick -up policy.
In the past, when lobby pick-up was an option, it became very difficult to keep track of and monitor students and the adults picking up the students. We have several safety factors to consider including custody issues and "safe adults" who are on emergency contact lists.
From time to time there are extenuating circumstances. In those instances, Mrs. Shaughnessy will consider and/or approve alternate end of the day options.
During pick up lane, please make sure that your pick up sign is visibly hanging from your visor in the passenger side window. Thanks again for your patience and support! It’s been a great team effort to make this work for our student’s safety.
