Battle of the Books

All fifth grade classes at Conley are participating in our Battle of the Books competition on Friday, May 13th from 9am-12 noon in a game show format to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. We are in need of a few parent volunteers to act as “team guides” in order to help teams follow their battle schedule that day. If you are interested in helping from 8:30am-12:00pm, please email or send in a note by March 24th. We will then have a lottery to determine our 2016 team guides. I will let you know if you are one of the lucky winners. Thanks in advance for your support with this worthwhile reading incentive program. Let the battle begin!

Recycling Plastic Bags!

Do you have plastic bags you need to get rid of? Wait no more!! Bring in your plastic bags and film (bread bags, dry cleaning bags, cereal bags, etc.) to school and place them in the recycling bins located in the rotunda.

We will review Unit 4 for the next 2 weeks due to PARCC testing. We will spend our literacy block going back over concepts that we covered during the last 5 weeks. The unit test will be on THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH. The following week we begin our FINAL Reading Street unit! It’s seems surreal to me that the year is almost over. Our fifth and final unit focuses on the theme of adventurers. Last year, the stories included in this unit seemed to be some of the class favorites!

We jumped right to Topic 10 in Math. Topic 10 focuses on deep understanding of the measurable attribute of volume and using numbers and operations to describe and compute the volume of rectangular prisms and composite shapes. This is a Common Core skill that will more than likely be tested on the PARCC testing so I wanted to make sure the students were exposed to it, therefore we didn't test over Topic 9. We will continue to work on this for the next 2 weeks. Test date to be determined.

Social Studies

We will switch our focus to social studies. The students will be working on their Famous Person research, paper, and projects during this time. Due dates for this are as follows:

April 7th: Notes due

April 14th: Rough Draft due

May 12th: Final copy of paper and projects due

May 27th: Wax Museum (more details to come)
