Eckert Intermediate
Soaring Above The Rest Towards Success
September 2014
A Message from Your School Principal
At Eckert Intermediate, we are celebrating a very successful opening to the 2014-2015 school year. We have lots to celebrate here at Eckert! The Texas Education Agency assigned Eckert a “Met Standard” rating based on the STAAR scores from last spring. Our students showed progress from the previous year and are continuing to make gains in Reading, Math and Science. Eckert also achieved a “Distinction” in the area of Science highlighting the hard work the students and teachers put into learning and applying Science concepts.
The key to success is the ability and willingness of parents to be partners in education with teachers. Teachers here at Eckert need parents to support learning through a regular review of assigned homework, due dates, and grades. Our students are bringing home binders with daily homework assignments. They also have planners that will help them keep up with projects and deadlines. Please check these over each night with your child to ensure that all work is being completed on time and successfully.
Our teachers are setting class and individual goals with the students. It is important for our students to set personal goals and track their progress as they move closer to these goals. As students and classes achieve their goals, students will earn incentives and rewards such as parties, outside or movie time, or jean days. Please talk to your child about goals he/she is setting for grades, attendance or homework.
Thank you for your continued support of our school!

A Message from Your Assistant Principals
We very much look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child during this academic year and will do our absolute best to ensure their success. The transition from Elementary to Intermediate school for 5th graders, can present challenges to both students and parents. We invite you to speak to us throughout this school year.
We could use your assistance in helping your child build his/her organizational, academic and social skills. Each one of our students has been issued a binder that contains sections for each core content area class. Also included in that binder is their weekly conduct report and agenda that outlines what students are to accomplish daily. Please be in the habit of checking your child’s binder daily for messages teachers have posted regarding your child’s performance and that he/she is keeping work from classes in the appropriate section.
We recommend that you review homework with your child and ask questions so that you may celebrate mastery of new concepts and know that they’re on the path toward success. We also recommend that you have them to read at least 15-20 minutes per night and ask them to tell you about what they’ve read (this helps to build reading comprehension and fluency). Thank you in advance for being a key part of your child’s education! We invite you to participate in any of the following parent activities: Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Reading with Students program, Career Share, and a host of planned events throughout this school year.
One of the most critical components to a child’s academic success is the school and parent being unified. All of our teachers are having the students to set class and individual goals so that they are able to consistently mark and measure their own progress. Our motto this year is “soaring high above the rest toward success” and we fully believe that your child will be successful in achieving his/her goals with us working together to get them there.
Sincerely,
Mr. Mark Herndon & Ms. Elia Martinez

Counselors Corner
The counselors are excited about the start of the 2014-2015 School year. This year we are offering our usual services as well as implementing several new opportunities for our students, parents, and faculty.
We are committed to meeting ALL of the needs of our students, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and academically. We offer a wide range of services from individual to group counseling, academic planning, developing basic life skills, and serving as a support system for our students, parents, and faculty. Our services are extended to supplying our students with hygiene products, food and clothing, on an as-needed basis, and when supplies are available. In addition to our on-campus services, we provide students and families with resources needed to seek additional services outside of school.
We are overwhelmingly excited about our continued relationship with Houston Food Bank where we provide weekend snacks for those students that could use additional support over the weekend breaks. This year we will implement Connect with Kids, a guidance program designed to benefit our students, parents, and faculty. We will incorporate Connect with Kids with our monthly social skills where we will demonstrate and role play appropriate behavior and positive character traits. In addition to those services, we plan to have several speakers coming in this year to address a variety of topics.
Again, we look forward to servicing our students this year, and we encourage parental support to assist us in reinforcing positive standards for our students.
Where there is a need, we will provide!

Advice from Your Testing Coordinator
Parents,
Welcome back to another exciting and important year at Eckert Intermediate. As the school’s testing coordinator, one of my responsibilities is to make certain your child has the best environment possible to be successful when they take all of their tests this year. Therefore, I will be working closely with them and you as well answering any questions you may have in the process. Here are a couple of items you need to know if you are the parent of a fifth grader.
First, your child will have three opportunities to pass the STAAR reading test but only one opportunity to take the STAAR math test. There is only one administration of the 5th grade math test due to changes the state of Texas is making in the area of mathematics assessment and STAAR. I look forward to being as available as I can in answering your questions and know we will have a tremendous school year!

A Message from Your Libraian
For those of you who have not met me, I am Ms. Holloway. I am your librarian here at Eckert.
This year is going to be a wonderful, fun-filled, year in the LMC!
I’d first like to introduce Ms. Henson, my library aide. She is an awesome asset to the library and you all will love her!
The Summer Reading Challenge has come to a close. Eckert was ranked #108 in the country, with 404, 845 minutes read! You all did a great job reading and I hope to beat that mark this year!
Don’t forget to read each day for 15 minutes. It doesn’t matter what you read, as long as you are reading!

A Message from your Instructional Technology Specialist
It is hard to believe that Summer is gone and the school year has already started. That means it’s time to start using your devices for school and less entertainment and games. There is no need to put them away. Gaining access to the internet with your electronic device is a great tool for studying and homework. Keep in mind that there devices other than just a desktop computer to get homework done. Tablets, smartphones, even your gaming consoles are great tools for internet access. Parents, I encourage you to have a plan in place for your children’s electronic device use during the school year. Before they play with their devices make sure they are using it for homework and studying. Make sure you are monitoring and setting rules for their device use during school time and weekends.
We are learning and integrating technology a lot on our campus which means that your child may be asked to use certain websites such as Kidblog, Edmodo, or Weebly. These sites and others are safe and secure for children’s use when involving their education. Please support our teachers and their help in integrating technology to prepare students for the real world.
I invite you to register for Parent Connect on the Eckert or Aldine website to always stay on top of your children's grades online before the progress reports and report cards go home. Use our Eckert website as a resource to get any information about events going on our campus. Please follow us on Twitter at @EckertEagles for up to date events on our campus. If you have any technology concerns or question, please do not hesitate to contacts us. You can also view this form electronically on our Eckert website. I’m looking forward to working with you and your children this year.
Sincerely,
Bradford Harris
