Upcoming ACT
Juniors and seniors who wish to take the ACT on Saturday, April 13th or Saturday, April 20th are encouraged to stop by and pick up an ACT registration packet from Ms. Romeijn. Registration forms and payment must be received to the front office by the end of the day on February 28th, 2019.
Students are encouraged to study for the ACT and/or SAT and test prep sites can be found here under the Counselor's Corner on the WHS website.
Lisa Murkowski summer internship opportunity
Seniors have an opportunity through Lisa Murkowski's office to participate in a summer internship for just-graduated Alaskan high school students. Information is available at https://www.murkowski.senate.gov/assistance/students/internships. Please see Ms. Romeijn for printed application packets.
The deadline to apply for the Summer High School Internship is March 15. Applicants are strongly urged to submit their applications via fax (202-224-5301 Attn: Intern Coordinator) or e-mail (to krystal_edens@murkowski.senate.gov) as the Senate’s mail screening procedures can significantly delay delivery and late applications will not be considered.
Juniors ACT
Mark your calendars! The juniors will take the ACT on Wednesday, February 20th. WPSD has paid for this test so it is in your best interest to have your child there. Testing will begin immediately at 8:00 in the room next to Cindy Martin’s in the middle school. Late students will not be admitted. Students should plan on showing up around 7:45 to get settled. The test will likely finish up around 12:30ish so students will not be expected to be in 5th hour so that they can take a lunch break. Students will be expected to be in class for 6th and 7th hour.
Calculators are the responsibility of the students. All questions on the ACT can be answered without a calculator. There will not be extra calculators in the testing room so students are encouraged to bring their own or may check one out from Ms. Massin or Ms. Ingman the day prior to testing. Calculators cannot be shared between students and calculators must be on the approved calculator list. The ACT approved calculator list is attached. Students will not be allowed to go and get a calculator prior to the Math test. Students must have the calculator they are planning on using when they enter the testing environment.
Students cannot bring a backpack or cell phone to the classroom so please plan on leaving backpacks and cell phones in your locker or check your phone with Megan or Katelyn. In addition, smart watches, fitness bands and any other devices with recording, internet or communication capabilities are prohibited. Students will not have access to their phone during the breaks. No food or drink can be in the room. Students can bring a snack and water bottle but it must be left outside of the testing room. The ACT is a multiple-choice test in English, math, reading, and science along with a writing test. The test sequence is:
Test 1= 45 minutes
Test 2= 60 minutes
Break 10-15 minutes
Test 3= 35 minutes
Test 4= 35 minutes
Test 5= 40 minutes
A hard copy of the practice test book has already been distributed to students. Students are not required to practice prior to the ACT. In addition to the hard copy practice book, online practice opportunities can also be found at www.act.org/academy or www.march2success.org.
Parents/Guardians: Please make sure your son or daughter gets a lot of rest and a solid breakfast on test day so they can give their best effort! Let me know if you have any questions.
