Around the School
Grand View Elementary's Christmas program was on December 18th, and the students did a great job with their speaking roles and singing! Since October, Grand View students have been hard at work learning songs and lines for this year's Christmas play.
In "Is Santa Smarter?" Santa and his elves realized that they would run out of gas money and only be able make it to Grand View, Idaho to deliver presents! Thankfully, one of the elves was able to get Santa on the game show where you have to answer questions but can get help from local students. With the help of several 4th and 5th graders, Santa was quizzed on Christmas trivia in between the entire school singing catchy Christmas songs.
A big thank you goes out to each family that donated cookies to the concert, and to Santa for making an appearance to give goodie bags to each child at the end of the evening!
Inclement Weather
If school is canceled due to inclement weather, families will be notified via all-call and the school's closure will be posted on the school website.

Classroom Corner
Mrs. Lawrence (Fourth): Fourth graders are currently learning how authors use text and graphic features to make their ideas clear to the reader. While reading a nonfiction article, we have been learning how to use headings, diagrams, sidebars, graphs and many others things to help us understand the text. Students are also learning how to color-code paragraphs from the Step Up to Writing program.
Mrs. Malika (Fifth): The fifth graders have been continuing their hard work on multiplying and dividing decimals in math, and are making great progress! We are also spending some time at the end of this quarter reviewing all that we have done in math so far to stay sharp in our skills. In reading, we are working on identifying the topic, main idea, and supporting details of a text. In science, we are learning about the Solar System - including planets and their classification and the different phases of the moon.

At Home
Another note is to make sure the text students are reading while at home are grade/skill-level appropriate. Students should make sure to read literature (not just texts from one another), and expository texts. Students generally gravitate to reading books, not informational texts, but informational (non-fiction) texts are just as important. Try encouraging your child to read non-fiction books about something that interests them!
