PTA sponsored speaker for parents
Monday our students had the wonderful opportunity to hear from Nationally recognized speaker Katie L. Greer from http://www.klgreer.com/. Thank you for our PTA for bringing in this speaker for our students today as we felt like it was very beneficial to them and hopefully walked away with a good tip or two.
I wanted to share with you some quick points that Ms. Greer spoke to our students about so you can follow up with your child. Ms. Greer talked to students about the importance of social media behaviors and encouraged them on a few safety tips.
Some of her points included:
- How to use social media for good: Ex: JJ Watt used social media for good to raise money for the Harvey Hurricane Victims and raised over 28 million dollars through his positive social media presence. Ex: Anthony Senerchia, diagnosed with ALS, who inspired ice bucket challenge to bring awareness to ALS and raising over 100 million dollars for ALS research
- Social media safety tips like setting up an Instagram comment filter that many of our kids did not know about. The comment filter instructions can be found here.
- She spoke to the kids about College’s today and jobs in your future now google your name to see what pops up about you and your social media history. She shared that 67% of colleges and Universities google students names to look at your online presence if it is positive or negative and use this as part of their admission process.
- She also shared how if you see or read about bullying or mean things happening online how important it is to not just comment “STOP” or “Don’t do that” that they need to notify an adult immediately.
