The Juliano Journal

Week of February 1-5

Dear Families,

Hello! We had a wonderful week. On Thursday, we enjoyed a performance of our school musical, Honk! Jr. This musical was put on by our 4th and 5th grade students. The students did a fabulous job!

Our classroom Valentine’s Day celebration will be held on Friday, February 12th. I sent home a class list today for your child to use if they choose to distribute valentine cards. If your child brings valentines to school, please be sure that he or she brings one for each student in our class. We will be decorating bags here at school so there is no need to bring anything from home to put the cards in.

In preparation for the Winter Carnival on February 20th, the Winter Carnival committee is looking for people who are interested in donating baked goods for the cake walk and bake sale. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know and I will pass your name on to the committee. Thanks!

If you have a child turning 5 on or before September 1, 2016 you may register them for kindergarten in February for the 2016-2017 school year. Kindergarten registration will take place at the CORE Center at 300 Commerce Dr. in Crystal Lake. Woods Creek’s registration day will be February 23, from 9:00-11:00 a.m., 1:00- 3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Have a nice weekend!

Mrs. Juliano

Curriculum

Language Arts

This week we continued our study of migrating animals. The past two weeks the students have spent a lot of time researching the animals using books and iPads, and recording the information they learned on a graphic organizer. The students then created illustrated brochures about the animal they chose . These brochures are turning out great!

Thank you for sending in the information about your child's life as a baby and toddler. They will be using this information to do a writing activity about their life as a baby, their life as a third grader and what their aspirations are for the future. This writing will be shared with you at a later date.

Math

Last week we started unit 6 in Math Expressions. In this unit, students study the attributes of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons. They have been finding the perimeter and area of various shapes and rectangular figures. This week we explored the relationship between perimeter and area by investigating rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas and rectangles with the same area and different perimeters. These are challenging concepts and I am so proud of how hard our students are working! Today the students used their measuring skills to design paper robots.

Social Studies

We started chapter 2 this week. In this chapter, students will be learning how to use maps and terms like cardinal directions and intermediate directions to locate places on a map. They will also be using geography skills to map and measure distances from their own community to other locations in the country.
