Hawthorne Highlights
Art Madness with Ms. Federici-Diaz
In honor or Women's History Month, Hawthorne artists have been participating in "Art Madness" throughout the month of March. Inspired by March Madness, we began with a bracket of sixteen female artists, and students voted for their favorites in each class. The artworks reflected different time periods, cultures, art mediums and styles. Students engaged in discussion comparing each pair of artworks, and explaining which they would vote for and why. As we narrowed the field, students learned more about each artwork and artist, their lives and inspiration to inform their decisions. The final four artists were: Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, Sandy Skoglund, and Bisa Butler. After four rounds of voting, students chose Bisa Butler as their favorite female artist! To learn more about her and her artwork, watch this video.
Bisa Butler currently has an exhibit called BISA BUTLER: MATERFAMILIAS on view at The Gordon Parks Foundation in Pleasantville. Our budding artists would love the chance to see this beautiful artwork in person. If you are interested in visiting, the exhibit is on view until April 14th.

Please join us for the opening reception of the Mount Pleasant Visual Arts Festival: Through Lines, March 28th 6:30-8pm at the Westlake High School library. Each second grade artist will have an artwork on display. There will be activities for kids hosted by the high school art and photography clubs.
Are you a parent or family member who works in the arts? Our students would love to learn about what you do, and how art is part of different careers. Mrs. Federici-Diaz is seeking volunteers interested in running an art workshop on April 21st! If interested, please fill out this interest form: Art Day Interest Form.
STEM Speedsters with Ms. Aboulenein
Students are investigating the impact of design and the variation in mass on the speed of different cars in STEM class. They are planning and designing roadways using tracks. They are comparing the performance of 4 different vehicles on their tracks. Classes are discussing why they think the cars move at different speeds and travel different distances.
